Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF THE PORT

Waking in the DarkHazel awoke to the agonizing sting of a slap across her face. Her head thrummed with a violent, chemical headache, and the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. She tried to move her hands, but they were bound tightly behind her back with coarse industrial zip-ties that bit into her skin.

She was in a damp, abandoned warehouse, the floor covered in rusted metal shavings and broken pallets. The distant sound of foghorns told her she was near the industrial shipping docks. A single, harsh spotlight shone down on her, casting long, monstrous shadows against the corrugated metal walls.

Standing outside the circle of light was Marcus Vance, lazily tossing a silver switchblade in the air. Click. Clack. Click.

"Ah, the sleeping beauty awakens," Marcus sneered, stepping into the light. He reached down, grabbing a handful of her auburn hair and forcing her head back. "You know, up close, you really do look like Clara. It’s almost poetic. Dominic lost his wife because he refused to share the city’s revenue. Now he’s going to lose his precious nanny for the exact same reason."

"He won't give you anything," Hazel spat, wincing as the movement tore at her split lip. "He doesn't care about me. I'm just an employee. A temporary staff member. You’re using the wrong leverage, Marcus."

Marcus laughed, a high-pitched, manic sound that echoed off the high rafters. "Oh, sweet, naive Hazel. A man like Dominic Castellano doesn't bring a temporary staff member to the Syndicate Gala wearing his dead wife’s millions. He doesn't slaughter my men just for looking at you. He’s obsessed with you, girl. Because to him, you are a second chance at the life that was blown to pieces."

He pulled out a heavy satellite phone and dialed a number, switching it to speakerphone. It rang once before a voice answered—a voice so cold and laced with such pure, unadulterated malice it made the air in the warehouse drop ten degrees.

"Speak," Dominic’s voice commanded.

"Dominic, old pal!" Marcus shouted. "I have your lovely lady here. She’s looking a little worse for wear, I’m afraid. Silk doesn't hold up well in the docks."

Silence stretched over the line for three agonizing seconds. When Dominic spoke again, his voice was dangerously quiet, a tone that promised absolute annihilation. "If you have touched her, Marcus, I will skin you alive and feed you to the sharks in the harbor. Name your price."

"The Miami Port deeds. All of them. Transfer the ownership to my offshore account by midnight, or I put a bullet through her beautiful face and dump her body right outside your island fortress."

"Done," Dominic said instantly, without a shred of hesitation.

Hazel’s eyes widened in profound shock. The Miami ports were the crown jewel of the Castellano empire, worth billions, the source of all their logistics and power. He was giving it up instantly—for her.

"Dominic, no!" Hazel screamed toward the phone. "Don't do it! It’s a trap! He’s going to—"

Marcus slammed his hand over her mouth, cutting her off. "Smart man, Dominic. The transfer portal is open. You have thirty minutes. Don't be late." He cut the call, turning to his men with a dark, triumphant grin. "Get the boat ready. Once the transfer clears, dump the girl in the inlet. We don't leave witnesses."

The Hourglass Runs OutTime became a blur of terror. Hazel strained against the zip-ties, her wrists bleeding as the plastic cut deeper into her flesh. She looked around desperately for any means of escape, but she was surrounded by four heavily armed guards.

Twenty-five minutes passed. Marcus’s laptop chimed with a crisp, digital notification. His face lit up with greedy euphoria.

"The transfer is complete!" Marcus shouted, raising his arms in victory. "The Miami ports are mine! The Castellano empire is broken!"

He walked over to Hazel, drawing the silver switchblade from his pocket. The blade caught the harsh overhead light, gleaming with lethal intent. "Thank you for your service, Hazel. You were worth every penny."

"Marcus!" a voice boomed from the darkness of the warehouse rafters.

Before anyone could react, the massive glass skylight above shattered into a million pieces. A flashbang grenade dropped onto the concrete floor, exploding in a blinding, deafening roar of light and sound.

The guards screamed, blinded, firing their weapons blindly into the smoke.

From the shadows, a figure moved like a lethal wraith. Dominic Castellano erupted into the light, a silenced submachine gun in his hands. He didn't just shoot; he executed with terrifying, military precision. Thwip. Thwip. Thwip. Three guards dropped to the floor before they could even aim their weapons.

The fourth guard lunged at Hazel to use her as a human shield, but Dominic transitioned smoothly, drawing a heavy combat knife and throwing it with pinpoint accuracy. The blade buried itself deep in the guard's chest, sending him crashing into the rusted metal shelves.

The Final StandMarcus Vance, panicked and desperate, grabbed Hazel from behind, pulling her up and pressing the silver switchblade against her throat. His hands were shaking violently, the blade nicking her skin, drawing a thin line of bright red blood.

"Stay back, Dominic!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking in terror. "Stay back or I’ll throat-cut her right now! I swear to God I will!"

Dominic stood ten feet away, his gun raised, his eyes locked onto Marcus. The smoke from the explosion swirled around him, making him look like a demon materialized from the underworld. His face was completely calm—the terrifying calm of a man who had already accepted his own death.

"Look at me, Marcus," Dominic said softly, his voice echoing in the vast space. "Look at my eyes. Do you see fear? Do you see hesitation?"

Marcus blinked, his grip tightening on Hazel. "You gave up the ports! You’re soft!"

"I gave you the ports because a digital transaction can be reversed in five minutes by my hackers," Dominic said, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. "And I came here myself because I wanted to look into your eyes when I take your life. You made one fatal mistake, Marcus."

"What’s that?" Marcus whimpered.

"You thought she was my vulnerability," Dominic whispered, his eyes shifting to Hazel for a split second, sending a silent, desperate signal. "When in reality... she is my only reason to be ruthless."

In that fraction of a second, Hazel understood. She leaned her head back violently, slamming the back of her skull directly into Marcus’s nose. A loud CRACK echoed as his nasal bone shattered. Marcus cried out in agony, his grip loosening as he stumbled backward, the knife slipping from his hand.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He fired a single, devastating shot. The bullet tore through Marcus’s chest, lifting him off his feet and slamming him into the concrete floor. He twitched once, his eyes rolling back, before lying completely still in a pool of his own stolen luxury.

Dominic dropped his weapon, sprinting across the distance between them. He fell to his knees before Hazel, his large, trembling hands instantly cutting the zip-ties around her wrists. He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if he were trying to merge their bodies to keep her safe.

"I have you," Dominic fiercely whispered into her hair, his voice cracking with a raw emotion she had never heard from him before. "I have you, Hazel. You’re safe. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I let them take you."

Hazel clung to him, weeping silently against his shoulder, the scent of woodsmoke and gunpowder filling her senses. In that moment of absolute chaos and blood, she realized the most terrifying truth of all: she didn't want to leave him. She had fallen in love with the monster.
