Chapter 3 - THE FALL OF APEX DYNAMICSTwenty-four hours later, the tech world experienced a seismic shift.

Jasper sat in a cramped, foul-smelling motel room on the outer edge of Queens—the only place he could afford after his personal bank accounts were frozen under suspicion of corporate commingling of funds. Across the room, Priscilla was sitting on a stained bedspread, sobbing continuously, while Gillian stared blankly at her phone, watching her social media followers drop by the thousands as rumors began to leak.

Jasper’s phone, which was still functioning on a prepaid basic plan he’d been forced to buy at a gas station, buzzed violently.

It was a link to TechCrunch.

Jasper opened the article with shaking hands.

“In a shocking turn of events, rising tech star Jasper Vance’s startup, Apex Dynamics, has been shut down following a total withdrawal of capital by primary backer Vanguard Horizon. Documents leaked this morning reveal that Apex’s core propriety AI algorithm was actually developed under a sub-contract paid for by Robertson Global’s R&D division—meaning Vance owned zero rights to the technology he was pitching to investors.

Furthermore, reports indicate Vance used corporate funds to finance a lavish personal lifestyle, including luxury vehicles and fine dining, while misleading board members regarding his company's true ownership structure. Multiple board members have filed lawsuits claiming fraud.”

Jasper let out a strangled gasp, dropping the phone onto the carpet.

It was over. Everything he had built—every lie, every boast, every high-society dream—had been completely wiped out in less than a day. Hailey hadn’t just divorced him; she had erased his entire career with surgical precision.

Suddenly, his phone rang. It was an unlisted number.

Jasper grabbed it eagerly, pressing it to his ear. “Hailey?! Hailey, is that you?! Please, baby, I’m dying! I’m in a terrible motel, my company is gone, my life is ruined! Please tell me you’re coming back!”

There was a quiet, agonizing pause on the line. Then, a cool, composure-filled voice spoke.

It was Hailey.

She didn’t sound sad. She didn’t sound angry. She sounded like a woman who had woken up from a long, bad dream and was finally seeing reality with terrifying clarity.

“Hello, Jasper,” she said softly.

“Hailey! Oh God, Hailey, thank you for calling!” Jasper sobbed into the receiver, falling to his knees beside the motel bed. “I was foolish! I was influenced by my mother and sister! I didn’t mean any of those things! I love you, I love Toby! Please, tell your father to stop the lawsuits! We can fix this!”

“Influenced by your mother?” Hailey asked, her tone dry and unyielding. “Jasper, you handed me bus fare five days after my abdomen was cut open. You let your mother mock me while I was bleeding through my bandages. You drove off in a car my father bought for us, to go eat a two-thousand-dollar lunch while your newborn son rode a public bus.”

“I didn’t know who you were!” Jasper screamed, desperation driving him mad. “If you had just told me you were a Robertson, I would have treated you like a queen!”

A quiet, bitter laugh echoed through the receiver.

“And that, Jasper, is why you deserve everything that is happening to you,” Hailey said quietly. “You think respect, kindness, and love are things people have to earn with money. You thought I was weak because I chose to be humble. You thought I was helpless because I loved you enough to keep my wealth hidden.”

“Hailey, please!”

“Tomorrow morning,” Hailey continued, ignoring his frantic pleading, “you will receive service papers for full custody of Toby, along with a complete annulment of our marriage based on fraudulent intent. You will not receive a single cent of alimony. You will not receive visitation. My father’s legal team will ensure you are legally penniless by the end of the month.”

“You’re a monster!” Priscilla suddenly screamed from the background, grabbing the phone from Jasper’s hand. “You ruined my son! He was going to be a billionaire! You set him up!”

Hailey’s voice remained razor-sharp. “Hello, Priscilla. I hope you enjoyed the lunch at L’Étoile. Because effective five minutes ago, Robertson Global’s real estate division finalized the purchase of the mortgage on your suburban home. You have fourteen days to pack your things before the eviction officers arrive.”

Priscilla’s eyes went wide. She lost her breath, clutching her chest as she stumbled backward. “My... my house? You bought my house?!”

“Consider it reimbursement for the two years of verbal abuse I endured in your living room,” Hailey said coldly. “Goodbye, Vance family.”

The line went dead.
