Chapter 4 - THE HUNT FOR LEVERAGETwo weeks later.

The Vance family was living in a dilapidated two-bedroom rental apartment in a rough neighborhood on the outskirts of New Jersey. Their luxury furniture had been auctioned off to pay for initial legal representation, Priscilla’s home had been repossessed, and Gillian had been forced to take a job working night shifts at a fast-food drive-thru just to keep food on the table.
Jasper, however, refused to accept defeat. He spent sixteen hours a day sitting in front of a dirt-cheap used laptop he had bought from a pawn shop, frantically searching for any piece of dirt, any loophole, or any hidden secret about the Robertson family that he could use as leverage to force a settlement.
“There has to be something,” Jasper muttered to himself, his eyes bloodshot, his beard unkempt, his fingernails bitten down to the quick. “Nobody gets that rich without breaking the law. Finnley Robertson has to have a weak spot.”
And then, deep within an archived corporate filing from twelve years ago, Jasper found it.
It was a suppressed environmental liability report involving a massive chemical plant merger in South America that Robertson Global had overseen. According to the document—which appeared to have been quietly buried under a mountain of non-disclosure agreements—Robertson Global had paid off a local regulatory board to fast-track approval for an industrial pipeline.
Jasper’s heart pounded wildly in his chest. A sinister, triumphant grin spread across his haggard face.
“I’ve got you,” Jasper whispered, slamming his fist onto the table. “I’ve got you, you old bastard!”
He quickly downloaded the files, copied them onto an encrypted flash drive, and drafted an anonymous email addressed directly to Finnley Robertson’s private corporate assistant.
SUBJECT: Robertson Global Environmental Scandal - Media Release Pending
TO: F. Robertson
I have the complete, unredacted regulatory files on Project Solis. If you want this document kept out of the hands of the Wall Street Journal and the SEC, you will meet me alone at the Old Iron Works warehouse on 4th Street tonight at 11:00 PM. Bring $20 million in untraceable bearer bonds, a full dismissal of all corporate lawsuits against Jasper Vance, and signed, sole-custody surrender papers for Toby Vance.
If you call the police, the files go live automatically at midnight.
Jasper hit SEND.
He sat back in his squeaky chair, laughing maniacally. He felt the rush of power returning to his veins. He wasn’t a defeated man anymore; he was a blackmailer holding a gun to the head of an empire.
“Jasper?” Priscilla asked, stepping out of the kitchen with a plate of lukewarm canned beans. “What is it? Did you find something?”
“We’re rich again, Mom,” Jasper said, his eyes glittering with unhinged arrogance. “We’re going to be richer than ever. That bitch Hailey thought she could destroy me? She just guaranteed that her father is going to pay us for the rest of our lives.”
At 10:45 PM, Jasper arrived at the abandoned Old Iron Works warehouse on the docks. The night air was foggy, thick with the smell of salt water and rusted metal. Rain fell in a steady, cold drizzle.
Jasper walked inside the cavernous, dark building, clutching the flash drive tightly in his rain-soaked coat pocket. His footsteps echoed off the high steel beams.
“Robertson!” Jasper yelled into the shadows. “I know you’re here! Show yourself!”
A single high-powered floodlight suddenly flashed on, blinding Jasper. He shielded his eyes with his arm, taking a step back.
From behind the light, a silhouette emerged.
It wasn’t Finnley Robertson.
It was Hailey.
She was dressed in a tailored black trench coat, her hair styled flawlessly, her posture radiating total authority. Standing beside her were four armed men in tactical gear, along with Victoria Cross, the family lawyer.
Jasper’s jaw dropped. “Hailey? What... where is your father? He was supposed to bring the money!”
May you like
Hailey walked forward, stopping just ten feet away from him. She looked down at him with a mix of disgust and pity.
“My father is at home, Jasper, sleeping peacefully,” Hailey said, her voice echoing through the empty warehouse. “Did you really think you were the first low-level grifter to try blackmailing Robertson Global?”
