Chapter 5 - The King's Gambit

The day of the public tribunal arrived. The grand courtyard was packed with thousands of citizens and reporters. Clara stood in the center, chained, while Julian read the false charges of treason.

Alexander sat on the high throne, his face an unreadable mask of stone.

"King Alexander," Julian announced loudly, ensuring the microphones picked up every word. "The evidence is absolute. Your bride is a spy. Do you uphold the law of the land and sentence her to death, or do you prove yourself unfit to rule?"

The crowd held its breath. Evelyn watched from the front row, eagerly waiting for her daughter's demise, believing Julian would restore her wealth afterward.

Alexander slowly stood up from his throne. He walked down the steps, approaching Clara. Instead of drawing a ceremonial sword for execution, he drew a small, silver recording device from his pocket and connected it to the palace audio system.

A voice blasted through the speakers—it was Julian’s voice from the previous night in the West Tower: "...I am the one who orchestrated your family's downfall, and I am the one who framed you... I win the throne."

The crowd gasped in shock. Julian’s face turned completely white.
