Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

Gregory narrowed his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

Ryan reached into the pocket of his faded gray jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, tossing it onto the center of the walnut table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping directly in front of Marcus Whitfield, the CFO.

"Marcus," Ryan said. "Open it."

Marcus nervously plugged the drive into his laptop, his fingers shaking as he typed in the bypass codes. The projection screen on the wall behind Ryan flared to life, displaying a series of internal financial ledgers, private emails, and shell company registrations.

Gregory’s eyes went wide as he stared at the screen. The silver-haired executive suddenly looked ten years older.

"For the past four months," Ryan explained, his voice chillingly calm, "while you all assumed I was too busy mourning my father and playing single dad in Evanston to notice, I hired an independent forensic audit team. I didn't need to be in this building to see what you were doing, Gregory."

Ryan pointed to the screen. "Project Horizon. A multi-billion dollar logistics expansion that you, Gregory, have been pushing for the last six months. On paper, it looks like a brilliant strategic move for Caldwell Global. But in reality, three of the major subcontracting firms selected for the project are owned by a holding company registered in Delaware. A holding company whose primary beneficiary is a blind trust owned by... you."

A collective gasp echoed in the room. Diane and Patricia turned to look at Gregory in absolute shock.

"You were setting up a pipeline to siphon off over forty million dollars from my father's legacy directly into your private accounts over the next three years," Ryan said, his voice hardening. "And you thought you could pull it off because you assumed the new Chairman was just a weak, grieving single dad who didn't have the stomach for business."

"This is unverified garbage!" Gregory shouted, standing up so fast his chair flipped backward, crashing onto the carpet. "You're trying to frame me to justify a hostile takeover of your own board! Marcus, tell him this is nonsense!"

Marcus didn't look up from his laptop. His face was completely bloodless. "Gregory... it's all here. The bank routing numbers, the shell signatures, the wire transfers from the Swiss accounts. He has everything. Every single thing."

Gregory collapsed back down, his rage evaporating into pure panic. He looked around the room for allies, but the other executives were already backing away from him, their survival instincts kicking in.

"Mr. Caldwell," Brian Sutter, the head of operations, stammered. "I swear, I had no idea what Gregory was doing. We were just following his strategic directives."

"You were following him because you were lazy, Brian," Ryan countered sharply. "You were too busy enjoying your executive perks to do your due diligence. You all allowed a predator to run wild in this company because it didn't disrupt your lifestyle."

Ryan stood up from the chairman’s chair. Even in his ordinary clothes, his presence dominated the room, casting a long shadow under the bright lights.

"Gregory Hail, you are terminated effective immediately. You will leave this building with nothing but the clothes on your back. The legal team is already filing a criminal complaint with the federal authorities for corporate fraud and embezzlement. You won't be going to another firm, Gregory. You'll be going to prison."
