Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

The late afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the Chicago skyline, casting long, golden shadows across the thirty-eighth floor of Caldwell Global. The storm had passed, leaving behind a completely restructured company and a corporate culture that had changed forever in the span of a single day.
Ryan stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the winding Chicago River. He had taken off the faded gray jacket, draping it over the back of the chairman's seat, now wearing just his ordinary button-down shirt.
The door to the boardroom opened quietly. Lauren Brooks stepped in, holding a fresh cup of coffee.
"Mr. Caldwell? The press release regarding Gregory Hail's termination and the appointment of the new management team has been sent out. Wall Street is reacting incredibly well to your transparency. The stock is actually up three percent in after-hours trading."
Ryan took the coffee, smiling faintly. "Thank you, Lauren. You did excellent work today. You stayed calm when everything around you was collapsing. I appreciate that."
Lauren smiled, feeling a genuine sense of pride that no executive bonus had ever given her before. "Thank you, sir. Um... there’s someone downstairs waiting for you. The sitter just dropped her off."
Ryan’s eyes lit up instantly. "Bring her up."
A minute later, the heavy doors opened, and an eight-year-old girl with a bright purple sweater and completely mismatched socks ran into the boardroom. Her boots clicked loudly on the hardwood floor before she threw her arms around Ryan's waist.
"Daddy!" Lily cried, burying her face in his shirt. "You took so long!"
Ryan laughed, lifting her up and setting her gently on the edge of the massive walnut table, right beneath the portrait of her grandfather. "I know, sweetie. I had to finish a few meetings."
Lily looked around the massive, luxurious room, her wide, serious eyes taking in the leather chairs, the pristine table, and the glowing monitors. Finally, her gaze landed on the high-backed chairman's seat where her father’s faded gray jacket was hanging.
She looked at her dad, her grandfather's stubborn chin tilting up slightly. "So... did you decide what kind of boss you wanted to become?"
May you like
Ryan reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his heart full as he looked at the future he was building for her.
"I decided," Ryan said softly, his voice echoing with absolute clarity in the quiet room, "to be the kind of boss who remembers what it feels like to wait in the lobby."
