Chapter 4 - The Backlash and the Counter-Strike

By that evening, the story had gone completely viral.

A student in the second row had filmed Nathan’s entire speech and the subsequent slide show on their phone. They uploaded it to TikTok with the caption: "Valedictorian exposes his deadbeat dad and stepmonster on stage."

Within six hours, the video had over ten million views. The internet was in a frenzy.

Our tiny apartment, usually so quiet, was buzzing. My phone wouldn't stop ringing with calls from local reporters, old neighbors, and even people I hadn't spoken to since high school. Nathan sat at our small kitchen table, calmly drinking a cup of tea, looking entirely unbothered by the storm he had created.

“Nathan,” I said, sitting down across from him. “Are you sure you’re okay? Your father’s threat about Columbia... it kept me up all afternoon.”

Nathan reached across the table and took my hand. “Mom, Arthur Sterling is on the board of trustees at Columbia. He personally called the admissions office today. My scholarship is completely safe. In fact, they’re fast-tracking my housing application so we can move closer to campus.”

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for twelve years. A single tear slipped down my cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of sorrow. It was pure relief.

But our peace was short-lived.

At 8:00 PM, a loud, aggressive knock rattled our front door.

I stood up, my heart hammering, but Nathan was already on his feet. He opened the door to find Eric standing on our porch. But the arrogant, powerful man from this morning was gone.

Eric looked ruined. His hair was disheveled, his eyes were bloodshot, and he smelled faintly of whiskey.

“You pleased with yourself?” Eric spat, pushing past Nathan into our tiny living room. He looked around our modest apartment with disgust, though there was a desperate edge to his anger now. “My company’s stock dropped twelve percent today. My board of directors is forcing me to take a leave of absence. Brittany has locked herself in the bedroom crying because she lost her modeling contracts. Are you happy, Sarah? You destroyed us!”

“You destroyed yourself, Eric,” I said, standing tall in my own home. “You chose to ignore your son. You chose to humiliate me. You chose to let your wife treat me like garbage. We didn't write those bounced checks. You did.”

“I’m going to ruin you,” Eric whispered, pointing a shaking finger at me. “I have lawyers. I will drag you through the courts until you don’t have a single penny left to buy your cheap clothes. I’ll make sure Nathan’s name is dragged through the mud so badly no company will ever hire him.”

Nathan stepped between us, his face cold. “You won’t do any of that, Dad.”

“Oh, really? And who’s going to stop me? Your little internet friends?”

Nathan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive. He held it up in front of Eric’s face.

“Do you know what’s on this, Dad?” Nathan asked quietly.

Eric frowned, his eyes darting to the drive. “What is that?”

“This is a complete backup of the offshore accounts you and Brittany set up under her shell company, ‘Cobalt Luxe Promotions,’” Nathan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “The ones you used to funnel money out of your firm to hide your personal assets from the divorce court and the IRS. The ones you used to claim you couldn't afford child support.”

Eric’s breath hitched. The remaining color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.

“Where... how did you get that?” Eric stammered, his voice suddenly losing all its volume.

“You left your laptop open on your desk last Thanksgiving when you forced me to come over to act as a prop for your holiday photos,” Nathan said, his smile razor-sharp. “I’m an IT major, Dad. It took me five minutes to clone your hard drive. I was waiting for the right moment to use it. And you and Brittany gave it to me this morning.”

Nathan leaned in close. “So here is what’s going to happen. You are going to leave this apartment. You are going to write a check for every single dollar of back child support you owe my mother, plus interest. And if you ever speak to her, look at her, or threaten us again... this drive goes directly to the federal forensic audit department.”
