Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the morning sun broke beautifully over the campus of Columbia University.

The air was crisp and filled with the promise of autumn. I stood in the doorway of a beautiful, spacious two-bedroom apartment just two blocks from the campus gates. We had bought it with the money Eric had been forced to pay, a permanent sanctuary for us.

Nathan was standing in front of the mirror, adjusting his collar for his first day of university classes. He looked so grown up, so confident, so ready to take on the world.

He turned to me and smiled, walking over to wrap his arms around me.

“Ready for your first day of retirement, Mom?” he teased gently.

I laughed, a sound that felt light and completely natural now. “I don't think I know how to retire, Nathan. Arthur Sterling offered me a position managing his charitable foundation’s scholarship fund. I think I’m going to take it.”

Nathan’s eyes shone with pride. “They’re lucky to have you. You know more about what it takes to survive and succeed than anyone else.”

He grabbed his backpack, stepping out into the hallway, but before he pulled the door shut, he paused. He looked back at me, his face softening with that same deep, unbreakable love I had seen on the graduation stage.

“I love you, Mom,” he said softly. “We made it.”

“We made it, my beautiful boy,” I whispered.
