Chapter 4 - The Breach at Mount SinaiThe heavy oak door of Room 412 burst open with a force that made the medical charts rattle against the wall.

Richard Sterling stood in the doorway, flanked by his legal counsel, Marcus Vance. Richard’s face was dark, thunderous, and flushed with adrenaline. His dark eyes swept the room with predatory intensity, bypassing Julian entirely at first, locking instantly onto Natalie and the tiny bundle resting against her chest.
For a moment, the room fell completely silent. The only sound was the steady hum of the hospital air conditioner.
Richard stepped into the room, his long strides eating up the distance until he was standing right at the foot of the hospital bed. His chest rose and fell in heavy, controlled breaths, his eyes darting from Natalie’s pale, composed face down to the infant wrapped in cream fabric.
"Is this some kind of sick joke?" Richard’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with suppressed fury. He pointed a trembling finger toward the baby. "Whose child is that, Natalie? Explain yourself right now."
Natalie didn't flinch. She adjusted the blanket over her daughter’s shoulder with agonizing slowness, her movements dripping with calm indifference that drove Richard to the edge of madness.
"Good afternoon to you too, Richard," Natalie said smoothly, not even bothering to look up. "Do you always enter a woman's hospital room like a debt collector trying to repossess furniture?"
"Don't play games with me!" Richard snapped, taking another step forward. "When we divorced, the medical consensus was absolute. You were barren! The specialists confirmed it! So how—how—is there an infant sitting in your arms right now?"
"Oh, you mean your expensive doctors?" Natalie finally raised her eyes, meeting his furious gaze with a cool, piercing stare. "The ones you hired to diagnose me, dismiss me, and give you a convenient moral out to sign divorce papers and walk away to your next corporate conquest? Those doctors?"
Richard’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "They were the top specialists in the country—"
"And they were wrong," Julian interrupted smoothly, standing up from his chair.
Until that moment, Richard seemed to have completely ignored Julian’s presence in the room. He snapped his head around, his dark eyes finally locking onto Julian Hayes. Richard’s expression twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated contempt as he recognized the man standing before him.
"You," Richard whispered, the word tasting like poison in his mouth. "Julian Hayes. You’re the senior partner at Hayes & Associates. What the hell are you doing in my ex-wife’s hospital room?"
Julian buttoned his suit jacket with calm deliberation, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Natalie. He towered over Richard by an inch, radiating an effortless, quiet power that contrasted sharply with Richard’s frantic energy.
"Not your ex-wife, Richard," Julian corrected smoothly, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips. "Natalie's name hasn't been Sterling in eight months. And as for what I'm doing here... well, I happen to be the man who actually appreciates the incredible woman you were too blind and arrogant to hold onto."
Richard’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. He took a sharp step toward Julian, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"You son of a bitch," Richard snarled. "Are you telling me—while we were still married, while she was still living under my roof—"
"Stop right there, Richard," Natalie’s voice cut through the room like a razor-sharp blade. She stood up from the bed, holding the baby securely against her chest, her posture tall and unyielding. The sheer authority in her tone made both men freeze. "Don't you dare project your own toxic filth onto me. You walked out that door in Manhattan eight months ago without looking back. Whatever happened after that door closed is none of your business."
Marcus Vance, sensing the situation spinning dangerously out of control, quickly stepped forward, holding up a hand.
"Mr. Sterling, please," Marcus whispered urgently. "We need to handle this through legal channels. If there's a question of paternity or timeline—"
"Paternity?" Richard laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. He glared at Natalie, his eyes flashing with a terrible, vindictive realization. "Oh, I see the game now. You thought you could trap some wealthy fool, or maybe you planned this all along to come after my estate. Well, let me tell you something, Natalie—if you think you're getting a single cent of Sterling money for a child that isn't mine, you are out of your mind!"
Julian’s eyes turned cold as Arctic ice. He stepped directly into Richard’s personal space, forcing the billionaire to take a half-step back.
"Watch your tone when you speak to her, Richard," Julian said softly, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "Because if you ever accuse her of something like that again, you won't just be fighting a custody battle or a divorce settlement. You’ll be fighting me. And trust me—you don't want to make an enemy of Hayes & Associates."
Richard stared at Julian, chest heaving, realizing for the first time that he was completely outmaneuvered. He turned his gaze back to Natalie, his eyes burning with a mixture of rage, disbelief, and a strange, lingering sting of betrayal.
"This isn't over," Richard muttered, backing slowly toward the door. "DNA tests don't lie, Natalie. If that child carries my blood, I will take her from you before you even know what hit you. And if she doesn't... then you're nothing more than a pathetic footnote in my past."
With a violent swing of the door, Richard stormed out of the room, followed closely by a sweating, panicked Marcus Vance.
The door clicked shut, leaving a heavy, charged silence in their wake. Natalie let out a long, shaky breath, her knees suddenly feeling weak. Julian caught her by the waist, gently guiding her back down to sit on the edge of the bed.
"Are you okay?" Julian asked, his voice filled with tender concern.

Natalie looked down at her baby girl, who had slept through the entire shouting match, breathing softly against her chest. Natalie raised her eyes to meet Julian’s, a fierce, determined spark burning in her gaze.
"I’ve never been better, Julian," Natalie whispered. "Let him demand his DNA tests. Let him try everything he has. He has no idea what’s coming for him."
