Chapter 5 - The Heir to Harrison GlobalInside the cramped, airtight confines of the panic room, the emergency air-scrubbers whirred to life, pumping a cool, steady stream of oxygen into the room.

Leo was crying softly into his knees, clutching his battered backpack like a shield. Marcus knelt beside him, checking the boy for injuries while keeping his rifle aimed directly at the reinforced glass door.

"He's clean, boss," Marcus whispered, his voice tense. "Just smoke inhalation and shock. But look at the monitor."

William turned to the secondary terminal built into the panic room console. Unlike the main office network, this system ran on an isolated, military-grade quantum satellite link that couldn't be hacked locally.

The screen flickered, displaying the live external camera feeds from the street level forty-two stories below.

A fleet of black tactical vans surrounded Harrison Tower. Uniformed men carrying assault rifles were cordoning off the block, while emergency sirens wailed in the distance. But it wasn't the police or the fire department controlling the perimeter—it was private security forces bearing the crest of Apex Global, Harrison Global’s primary, ruthless competitor.

"Apex," William spat, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "Jonathan Sterling."

"Sterling?" Marcus frowned. "Sterling has been trying to merge with us for five years. But he doesn't have the liquidity for a hostile takeover of this scale. It would cost billions."

"He doesn't need liquidity if he steals the master encryption keys," William said, his eyes sharpening with a terrifying realization. "The coffee wasn't just meant to kill me. It was a distraction. While my security detail was scrambling to save my life, the system was downloading the entire cryptographic ledger of Harrison Global. Every patent, every offshore account, every land deed."

"And once you're dead," Marcus added grimly, "the board—populated entirely by Sterling’s bribed proxies—will immediately sign off on the emergency liquidation. Sterling buys our entire empire for pennies on the dollar."

"Not while I'm breathing," William said coldly.

He tapped the console keyboard, pulling up the structural schematics of the tower's emergency communication relay. "Marcus, the panic room has a direct, analog copper-wire line to the Federal Reserve and the SEC. It bypasses all digital filters."

"Can you patch us through?"

"I don't need to patch us through," William said, a dangerous, calculating smile cutting across his face. "I programmed a dead-man’s switch into this tower the day it was built. If my biometric signature flatlines, or if I manually trigger Protocol Zero, the entire building’s financial database self-destructs, locking every asset in an irreversible quantum vault that even God couldn't crack."

Marcus stared at him in shock. "If you trigger Protocol Zero, you bankrupt yourself. You lose everything."

"Better to burn the kingdom to ashes than hand it to a thief," William replied steadily. "Hand me the manual key."
