Reporters from every major national network lined the press benches, their cameras flashing furiously as the defense team whispered anxiously among themselves at the oak table.
Preston walked into the courtroom wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, his wrists in heavy chains, his once-pristine custom tuxedo nothing more than a distant, humiliating memory. He looked older, gaunt, and broken. His arrogant, smug posture was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated hunch.
As he was led past the gallery, his eyes swept across the room and landed directly on me.
I sat in the front row, wearing a sharp, tailored ivory blazer, my posture upright, calm, and completely unshakeable. Sophie wasn't with me; she was safely at home playing with her new golden retriever puppy, exactly where an eight-year-old child belonged.
Preston stopped for a fraction of a second, his lips parting as if he wanted to say something—a plea, an insult, a desperate demand for family loyalty.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply met his gaze with absolute, unyielding serenity.
The bailiff tapped his gavel. "All rise for the Honorable Judge Hernandez."
Preston lowered his head in utter defeat and took his seat at the defense table.
As the trial commenced, the giant courtroom monitors flickered to life, automatically queuing up Exhibit A: the crystal-clear, uncompressed 4K security footage from the Whitmore Hotel ballroom.
The video began to play on loop.
