Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE GOLDEN CHILD"Turn that off!"

My father roared, lunging forward from his VIP table and pointing a shaking finger at the sound technicians trapped in the corner. "Turn it off right now! This is a malicious deepfake! It's cyberterrorism!"

"It's not a deepfake, Arthur," a booming voice echoed from the double doors.

Everyone turned.

Detective Marcus Vance walked into the ballroom, flanked by four uniformed Chicago Police Department officers. His badge glinted under the crystal chandeliers. Behind him walked two federal cybercrime investigators holding forensic data tablets.

The silence that followed was absolute. You could hear the hum of the projector fan echoing off the marble floors.

"I am Detective Vance, Chicago PD," he announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "We have received uncompressed, cryptographically verified evidentiary files directly from the Whitmore Hotel’s primary black-box server."

Preston stumbled backward, his custom tuxedo suddenly looking like a straitjacket. "This is... this is illegal! You didn't have a warrant! My father owns half this—"

"Your father owns real estate, Mr. Vance. He doesn't own the law," Detective Vance interrupted smoothly. He walked right up to the dais, stopping just inches from the groom. "Preston Vance, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon—specifically, a solid oak menu board—and malicious fabrication of evidence."

"Mom! Dad! Do something!" Preston screamed, his aristocratic facade shattering completely as panic took over. He looked like a cornered animal, his eyes darting frantically toward our parents.

My mother stood up slowly, her face pale, her hands trembling as she clutched her diamond handbag. She looked at Preston, then toward the giant screen which was now looping the crystal-clear footage of him framing an innocent child.

For the first time in thirty years, my mother didn't say a single word to defend him. She simply turned her head away, unable to meet his pleading gaze.

"You can't do this!" Preston thrashed as two officers stepped forward, twisting his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Evelyn! EVELYN! TELL THEM TO STOP!"

I stepped out from the shadows near the entrance, walking slowly down the ivory aisle runner—the very same runner that was still stained with my daughter's blood.

I stopped a few feet away from my handcuffed brother.

"You told the entire room that's what happens when you raise a thief, Preston," I said softly, letting every word hang in the heavy air. "You were right about one thing."

Preston glared at me, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom. "What?"

"Actions have consequences," I replied, giving him a cold, empty smile. "Welcome to your first real consequence."
