Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the CartersSix months later.

The estate had been completely transformed. The cold, austere interior decor chosen by Eleanor—filled with dark woods, gloomy velvet drapes, and pretentious antiques—was replaced with bright, open spaces, vibrant art, and the warm hum of life.
The east wing had been converted into a state-of-the-art philanthropic foundation, managed entirely by Claire, dedicated to supporting displaced women, orphans, and survivors of domestic abuse and financial exploitation.
As for Eleanor and Natalie, their trial had been swift and devastating. Stripped of their wealth, abandoned by the fair-weather socialite friends they had spent years impressing, and facing mounting federal prison sentences, they discovered the true cost of cruelty. Marcus had already cut a deal with the prosecutors, testifying against his own sister in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence, plunging their family alliance into bitter, mutual destruction.
They lived out the rest of their days in quiet infamy behind concrete walls, forgotten by the society they had worshiped.
And on the sprawling lawns of the Carter estate, the snow had long since melted away, giving way to rolling fields of vibrant green grass and blooming summer wildflowers.
I sat on the wide stone veranda, a cup of coffee resting on the table beside me, watching Claire laugh as she walked through the garden with our newly adopted rescue dog, a golden retriever that bounded joyfully across the lawn.
She stopped, turned around, and looked up at the veranda, her eyes locking onto mine.
She smiled—a radiant, untroubled smile that held no shadows, no fear, and no looking back.
I stood up, walked down the stone steps, and joined her in the sunlight.
Some people spent their whole lives fighting for wealth, power, and status, believing those things could shield them from the cold. But they never understood the ultimate truth of the world:

True power isn't found in a bank account, a title, or a mansion.
It’s found in the person who stands beside you when the storm hits hardest—and the absolute, unyielding willingness to burn down the entire world to keep them warm.
