Chapter 4 - The Audit BeginsBy 3:00 AM, the grand estate of the Carter family no longer belonged to Eleanor.

Federal marshals and forensic accountants swarmed the mansion. The sound of high-end heels clicking on marble was replaced by the methodical tapping of laptop keyboards and the rustle of financial ledgers being seized from the private study.

Eleanor and Natalie were confined to the small sitting room off the kitchen, their phones confiscated under a federal preservation order. They were forbidden from contacting their lawyers, their socialite friends, or anyone else who might help them liquidate remaining assets.

I stood in my late father’s private office, watching the snow continue to fall heavily against the massive bay windows. Arthur Harris stood beside me, handing me a preliminary report on the estate's financial health.

"They've been busy over the last three years, Commander," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. "Ever since your father’s health began to fail, your mother and sister have been systematically draining the subsidiary accounts. They’ve funneled nearly twelve million dollars into offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands."

I flipped through the bank statements, my expression hardening with every page. "Shell companies? Under whose name?"

"Primarily Natalie’s boutique firm, and a phantom consulting agency operated by your mother’s brother, Marcus," Arthur replied. "They thought they were being clever. But your father anticipated this exact maneuver. That’s why the master trust was structured as an irrevocable asset shield. The moment the morality clause was triggered, every single transaction executed by your mother in the last thirty-six months was flagged as fraudulent conversion of trust property."

"Which means?"

"Which means," Arthur smiled thinly, "not only do they lose the mansion, the cars, and the trust funds, but they are personally liable for every single penny they stole. If they can't repay the twelve million within seventy-two hours, the courts will seize every personal asset they own—down to the designer handbags and diamond necklaces they’re wearing right now."

I closed the folder and set it down on the mahogany desk. "How is Claire?"

Arthur’s demeanor softened slightly. "I received a secure update from Dr. Vance ten minutes ago. Her core temperature has normalized. She’s resting comfortably under heavy sedation, but her vitals are strong. She’s going to make a full recovery, Daniel."

A wave of profound relief washed over me, displacing the icy anger that had gripped my chest all night.

Claire had been through hell since the day she married me. She had endured Eleanor’s constant snobbery, Natalie’s petty cruelties, and the crushing loneliness of being married to a man whose life was bound by classified duty. She never complained. She never asked for the wealth or the status. She had loved me for who I was—an ordinary soldier in her eyes, struggling to find his place in the world.

And my family had tried to kill her for a signature.

"Good," I said quietly. "Double the private security detail at the hospital. I don't want anyone—not a nurse, not a doctor, not a stray visitor—getting within fifty feet of her room without my direct biometric authorization."

"Already handled, Commander. Elite operatives from your unit are currently securing the entire floor."

"Good." I turned away from the window, my eyes reflecting the amber glow of the desk lamp. "Now, let's go talk to my mother. It’s time she learned what true discipline feels like."
