Chapter 1 - The Ambulance Ride and the Declaration of WarThe wail of the ambulance siren cut through the downtown traffic like a razor blade. Inside the back of the emergency vehicle, the paramedic’s hands moved in a blur of focused urgency, checking my vitals, applying an oxygen mask, and shouting instructions over the radio.

My world had narrowed down to a blinding, agonizing focal point: the sharp cramps tearing through my lower abdomen and the terrifying realization of the crimson stain spreading across the stretcher.

"Stay with me, Mrs. Hayes. Focus on your breathing," the paramedic urged, his eyes locked onto mine.

"My baby..." I whispered, the words muffled beneath the plastic mask. Tears leaked from the corners of my eyes, burning hot against my temples.

Sitting on the narrow bench across from me, his large frame cramped inside the claustrophobic space of the moving vehicle, was Ethan. My older brother. A corporate litigation shark who spent his days destroying multi-million-dollar conglomerates in federal courtrooms. Right now, he looked less like a lawyer and more like a predator ready to tear flesh. His knuckles were bone-white as he gripped his knees, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.

When Ethan had arrived at the courthouse stairs, pushing through the terrified crowd with the terrifying aura of an executioner, he hadn't just made an empty threat to Vanessa. He had meant every single syllable.

"They're going to pay, Clara," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, a dead giveaway of the raging storm beneath. "Every single person who played a part in this. I swear to you on our mother's grave."

"Caleb... he just watched, Ethan," I choked out, fresh agony spiking through my body. "He didn't move. He let her push me."

Ethan didn't speak immediately. He leaned forward, taking my cold, trembling hand in his massive, warm grip. His eyes burned with a dark, terrifying resolve.

"Caleb made his choice the moment he decided to bring that parasite into a family courthouse," Ethan said softly, his voice dropping into a register that made the paramedic glance over nervously. "He thinks he can trade you in like an old car to clear the path for his golden-boy career at his new law firm? He has no idea what kind of monster he just invited into his life. Or rather... what kind of monster we are about to unleash on him."

As the ambulance tires screeched to a halt outside City General Hospital's emergency bay, the doors flew open to blinding white lights and shouting medical personnel. But amidst the chaos of gurneys and doctors, my mind wasn't on the sterile hospital smells or the looming threat of surgery.

It was on Caleb standing at the top of those marble steps, cold and indifferent. And the chilling realization that the sweet, submissive wife he thought he knew was officially dead. The war had begun. And we were going to burn his empire to the ground.
