Chapter 3 - The Freeze and the First StrikeThree days after losing my baby, I walked out of City General Hospital under my own power, flanked by Ethan and two private security guards hired by Marcus Vance.

The media circus outside the hospital doors was deafening. Flashes blinded me from every angle, reporters shouting questions about the tragic courthouse stairwell incident, Vanessa's sudden arrest, and the explosive crumbling of the golden-boy attorney Caleb Hayes.

When we reached the armored SUV, I caught a glimpse of Caleb across the street. He looked unraveled. His expensive Brioni suit was rumpled, his hair unstyled, and dark purple circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He took a desperate step toward our vehicle, screaming my name, but the security guards slammed the heavy doors shut, locking out the noise of the world.

Back at Ethan’s secure penthouse overlooking the city skyline, the real work began.

Marcus Vance had set up a temporary war room in the sprawling glass-walled study. Whiteboards were covered in financial flowcharts, bank routing numbers, text message logs, and corporate partnership agreements.

"Phase One is complete," Marcus announced, tossing a stack of legal documents onto the mahogany conference table. "The emergency asset freeze order was signed by Judge Holloway at 8:00 AM this morning. Every single personal bank account, joint checking, investment portfolio, and credit card belonging to Caleb Hayes has been frozen solid. He can't even buy a cup of coffee without our explicit authorization."

Ethan poured me a cup of herbal tea, gently placing it in my hands. "How is he surviving?" he asked Marcus.

"Badly," Marcus laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Sterling & Croft put him on immediate administrative leave this morning. The firm doesn't want a partner facing felony conspiracy and manslaughter charges associated with his mistress pushing his pregnant wife down courthouse stairs. Furthermore, Vanessa’s high-priced defense attorney tried to file for bail, but the judge denied it as a flight risk, especially after we submitted evidence that Vanessa recently liquidated her crypto holdings and booked a one-way flight to the Cayman Islands."

I sat quietly by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the rain begin to streak against the glass. "Caleb thinks he can weather this," I said quietly. "He thinks his father's old legal buddies will bail him out quietly behind closed doors."

Marcus smirked, tapping a thick manila folder labeled Confidential - Discovery.

"They would have, Clara. If Caleb hadn't been so arrogant. Look at this." Marcus slid a set of printed emails across the table toward me. "Three weeks before you filed for divorce, Caleb transferred five hundred thousand dollars from your joint savings account into a shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands under Vanessa's maiden name. He tried to hide marital assets to avoid splitting them with you in the divorce settlement."

Ethan leaned over my shoulder, reading the documents. A dark, dangerous grin spread across his face. "That’s not just civil fraud, Marcus. That’s wire fraud and embezzlement across state lines. Federal territory."

"Bingo," Marcus nodded, pointing a pen at Ethan. "Which means we aren't just suing him in civil court for wrongful death and divorce settlement violations. We are handing a golden-wrapped package to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for federal criminal prosecution. Caleb Hayes isn't just going to lose his money and his license. He’s looking at ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary."

My phone, sitting silently on the table, suddenly lit up. A notification flashed across the screen: an unknown number trying to call through the block filters.

Ethan reached over, picked it up, and hit speakerphone before I could protest.

A breathless, panicked voice broke through the receiver.

"Clara? Clara, please, you have to answer me! They froze all my accounts! I can't even pay my rent, and the firm locked me out of my office! Please, Clara, drop the charges, tell your brother to call off his attack dogs! We can talk about this like adults, please..."

It was Caleb. The great, untouchable Caleb Hayes, reduced to a pathetic, whimpering beggar on the other end of a burner phone.

I looked at Ethan and Marcus, then leaned down toward the microphone.

"Caleb," I said, my voice ice-cold and steady. "You stood at the top of those stairs and watched me fall. You watched our baby die so you could run off with your mistress."

"Clara, I panicked! Vanessa slipped, it was an accident—"

May you like

"The only accident," I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave, "was you thinking you could ever escape me. Enjoy the bottom, Caleb. Because I am just getting started."

I tapped the screen, cutting the call dead.
