Chapter 5 - THE DIGITAL EXPOSURE

Panic rippled through the front row of the audience as Marcus made a desperate lunge toward the master control console near the audio-visual booth.
"Stop him!" Clara yelled.
One of Clara's operatives moved with blinding speed, intercepting Marcus midway and pinning his arm behind his back with a sharp, controlled twist that elicited a sharp groan of pain from the corporate lawyer.
"Let me go! This is insane! She's fabricating digital evidence!" Marcus screamed, his face turning a mottled shade of crimson as the eyes of every high-society elite in Los Angeles burned into him.
Clara calmly stepped up to the control console, plugged Emily’s encrypted flash drive into the master port, and hit enter.
Instantly, the massive projector screen flickered to life. The glowing graphics of the charity gala faded away, replaced by a crystal-clear, high-definition video recording captured from the east wing powder room's hidden maintenance camera—a camera Marcus had falsely claimed was broken three weeks ago.
The ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
On the giant screen, the timestamp read clearly: 1:17 PM, Today.
The video showed the empty powder room. Seconds later, the door clicked open, and Marcus Vance slipped inside. He was holding Emily’s unattended handbag, which she had accidentally left on the vanity console moments before. With cold, practiced precision, Marcus unzipped the side pocket, slipped the velvet pouch containing Victoria’s diamond tennis bracelet deep inside, zipped it back up, and checked his watch before slipping back out into the corridor.
Gasp-like whispers erupted across the room like a sudden gust of wind.
Victoria stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock and horror as she stared up at the screen. The video played on, transitioning next to a series of intercepted encrypted emails between Marcus Vance and an offshore shell corporation, detailing the systematic embezzlement of four point eight million dollars from the Hayes Foundation over the past twelve months.
"No... that's... that's deepfake technology!" Marcus stammered, thrashing against the operative holding him, sweat pouring down his pale forehead. "Victoria, you can't believe this trash! She hacked my server!"
Victoria slowly turned her head away from the screen, her gaze locking onto Marcus. The cold fury in her eyes was absolute and terrifying. She didn't scream; she didn't throw a drink. Instead, she walked over slowly until she stood inches away from the trembling lawyer.
"Marcus," Victoria whispered, her voice dangerously calm. "For five years, I trusted you with my husband's legacy. I welcomed you into my home."
Before Marcus could speak, Victoria raised her hand and delivered a stinging, open-handed slap across his face that echoed sharply through the silent ballroom.
"You didn't just steal a piece of jewelry," Victoria continued, her voice trembling with rage. "You tried to steal my life's work. And you used an innocent girl to do it."
Just then, heavy footsteps echoed at the double doors once again. But this time, it wasn't local patrol officers—it was federal agents from the LAPD Financial Crimes Division, led by Detective Miller, who looked thoroughly sheepish as he stepped into the room and flashed an arrest warrant directly at Marcus.

"Marcus Vance, you're under arrest for grand theft, corporate embezzlement, and obstruction of justice," Detective Miller announced, snapping the cold steel cuffs onto the lawyer's wrists with a satisfying click.
As Marcus was dragged out of the ballroom in utter disgrace, the heavy silence broke into a chaotic storm of flashing cameras and murmuring socialites. But Emily didn't care about the cameras. She stood tall, her head held high, as Victoria slowly walked over to her.
