Chapter 1 - The Hidden Lens and the Millionaire’s SecretThe warmth of Reid’s shoulder was an anchor Brooke hadn't realized she desperately needed. For five agonizing years, Trevor had made her feel small, fragile, and utterly replaceable. But as Reid gently adjusted his jacket over her and Lily to keep the cabin draft away, she felt a sudden, fierce sense of protection.

Across the aisle, the man with the smartphone lowered his device, scowling in frustration before slipping it into his coat pocket. Reid let out a long, quiet exhale that rattled slightly in his chest.

"They're gone," Brooke whispered, her cheek still resting against the soft fabric of his navy jacket. "Who were they, Reid?"

Reid didn't answer right away. He kept his eyes fixed on the seatback screen ahead, where the flight tracker showed their plane cruising at 35,000 feet over the dark outline of the American South.

"People paid to ruin me," he said, his voice barely audible above the hum of the jet engines. "My full name is Reid Vance. Have you heard of Vance Logistics?"

Brooke’s breath caught in her throat. Vance Logistics was a global shipping giant headquartered in Charlotte, worth billions. "You're... you're the CEO?"

"I was," Reid corrected grimly. "Until forty-eight hours ago, when my board executed a hostile takeover based on fabricated financial records. A deepfake video surfaced showing me transferring millions into offshore accounts. The press is hunting me. The board wants me disgraced before I can reach Charlotte to present the original hard drives."

Brooke stared at him, her heart pounding. "Why didn't you fly private?"

"Because private flights leave paper trails," Reid replied, turning his deep grey eyes to look directly into hers. "Commercial flight 18B was supposed to be my invisible passage. But someone leaked my seat number." He looked down at Lily, who was fast asleep, clutching her folded napkin rabbit. "I'm sorry for dragging you into this, Brooke."

"You saved me from a scene back there," Brooke said softly. "And honestly... my life is already ruined anyway."

"Tell me," Reid urged gently.

For the next hour, as the aircraft glided through the turbulent night, Brooke unraveled the nightmare of her marriage. She told him how Trevor had slowly isolated her from her friends, convinced her to give up her accounting career to be a full-time mother, and then, without warning, changed the digital smart-locks on their home while she was visiting her sick mother. She recounted the horror of checking her mobile banking app to see a $0.00 balance, followed by an Instagram notification: Trevor at a luxury resort in Cancun, raising a champagne glass with a woman named Chloe Sterling—the head of marketing at a rival firm.

Reid listened in absolute, intense silence. But as Brooke mentioned Chloe Sterling’s name, his body went completely rigid.

"Say that name again," Reid demanded, his voice dropping an octave.

"Chloe... Chloe Sterling," Brooke stuttered. "Do you know her?"

Reid reached into his pocket and pulled out a encrypted tablet. He tapped the screen, bringing up a corporate organishational chart. He turned the screen toward Brooke.

At the top of the chart was the company that had just bought out Vance Logistics in a predatory bid. The chief strategist listed at the bottom of the buyout document was Chloe Sterling. And sitting right beside her name as the newly appointed "Operations Consultant" was a face Brooke knew all too well: Trevor Madsen.

Brooke’s head spun. "What... what is this?"

"Your ex-husband didn't just steal your money, Brooke," Reid said, his eyes burning with a dark, dangerous intelligence. "He helped Chloe Sterling steal my company. They used your joint account to launder the offshore bribe money to frame me. Trevor didn't leave you because he stopped loving you... he set you up to be the legal scapegoat when the federal audit hits."

The plane suddenly hit a severe pocket of turbulence, dropping several hundred feet. The cabin gasped, but Brooke couldn't feel the drop. She was frozen in terror. Her whole marriage hadn't just been a failure—it had been a orchestrated crime, and she was the designated fall guy.

"They think you're stranded, penniless, and helpless in Charlotte," Reid said, reaching out to cover her trembling hand. "They think I'm coming to surrender. They have no idea we just sat next to each other."
