Chapter 6 - THE NEW ERA

Six months later, the autumn breeze swept golden leaves across the courtyard of our family estate as I walked along the stone path with Brinley in my arms.
She was growing so fast, her bright, curious eyes taking in the world with a brilliant spark of intelligence that reminded me every day of how much strength she carried inside her. She wasn't just a survivor of her father’s cruelty; she was the rightful heir to an unbreakable legacy.
The corporate restructure of Vance Global Holdings was complete. The board had been entirely overhauled, replacing sycophants and yes-men with visionary leaders who respected the foundation of the company. My name was on the building, on the patents, and on the legal registry where it had always belonged.
Connor had faded into total obscurity, working a low-level sales job three towns over just to chip away at the crushing mountain of legal debt and restitution he owed the state and our corporate accounts. Betsy had retreated to a small, rundown apartment on the outskirts of the city, her high-society friends having long since cut ties with a family disgraced by fraud and public mockery.
As for me? I had never felt more alive.
Parker walked up beside me, holding a cup of hot coffee and smiling down at Brinley, who reached out her tiny hand to grab his finger.
“The quarterly reports just came in,” Parker said, his eyes crinkling with satisfaction. “Sterling—excuse me, Vance Global—just closed its most profitable quarter in history. The board wants to expand our international holdings by next spring.”
“Let them,” I smiled, adjusting Brinley’s pink knit cap against the crisp air. “We’re just getting started.”
I looked out past the iron gates of the estate, watching the world move forward under a clear, endless blue sky. They had tried to break me with a pair of divorce papers and a cruel sneer in a hospital room, believing a mother holding a daughter was weak.

They had forgotten that the fiercest storms in the world always begin with a mother protecting her child.
And the empire they thought they owned? It now belonged entirely to us.
