CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Who Walked Out of the Fire

The flames reached thirty feet into the night sky.

Firefighters shouted over the roar of collapsing timber.

"No signs of life!"

Ethan ignored every warning.

"LILY!"

He fought against two officers holding him back.

"My wife is in there!"

His daughter buried her face in Rebecca's coat, crying harder than she ever had before.

Then...

A firefighter suddenly pointed toward the rear of the cabin.

"WAIT!"

Everyone turned.

A weak hand pushed through the smoke.

Then another.

Covered in ash and blood, a woman crawled out from beneath the collapsed wall before collapsing onto the ground.

"Lily!" Ethan screamed.

He broke free and ran.

The woman opened her swollen eyes.

For a second, she couldn't recognize him.

Then a single tear rolled down her soot-covered face.

"You... found me."

Ethan dropped to his knees beside her.

"I never stopped loving you."

She smiled faintly before losing consciousness.

Three days later...

Lily finally woke up inside a secure hospital room guarded by FBI agents.

The first thing she saw was her daughter sleeping beside the bed, still holding her hand.

Lily quietly stroked the little girl's hair.

"You've grown so much..."

The child opened her eyes.

"Mommy?"

Within seconds, mother and daughter were crying in each other's arms.

Even Rebecca stepped outside to hide her tears.

Moments later, Ethan entered.

For several long seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Too much pain.

Too many unanswered questions.

Finally, Lily whispered,

"I thought you abandoned us."

Ethan's face broke.

"I thought you were dead."

Lily slowly shook her head.

"Your mother told me you signed divorce papers."

"She said you didn't want a wife from a poor family."

"She threatened to take our baby forever if I ever tried to find you."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Every lie...

Every missing year...

Every birthday he had never celebrated with his daughter...

Had been stolen.

Not by strangers.

By his own family.

But Rebecca interrupted the emotional reunion.

"We have a problem."

She placed several surveillance photos on the hospital bed.

One showed the black SUV leaving the burning cabin.

Another showed the mysterious man wearing dark sunglasses.

Ethan frowned.

"Who is he?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"We've been trying to identify him for years."

"His real name is unknown."

"But every criminal organization knows him by one title..."

The Broker.

"He doesn't kill people."

"He sells them."

The room fell silent.

Rebecca slid over one final photograph recovered from the burned cabin.

It showed Lily standing beside The Broker...

Not as a prisoner.

But smiling.

Ethan's heart stopped.

"What is this?"

Lily stared at the picture in horror.

"I've never seen this before."

Rebecca looked troubled.

"Our forensic team confirmed it isn't edited."

Before anyone could say another word...

A nurse rushed into the room.

"Agent Hayes!"

Rebecca spun around.

"What happened?"

"The little girl..."

"What about her?"

"She's gone."

Everyone froze.

The hospital bed where Ethan's daughter had been sleeping...

Was empty.

Only one thing remained.

A small white teddy bear.

Attached to it was a handwritten note.

"You found your wife...

Now try finding your daughter."

At the bottom of the note...

A black chess piece had been taped beside a single sentence.

May you like

"Game on."

To be continued in Chapter 6...
