chapter 1

The old church was filled with smiles, flowers, and quiet tears of joy.

Emily stood at the altar in a beautiful white gown, holding a bouquet that trembled ever so slightly in her hands. Beside her was Daniel—the man everyone believed was the perfect groom. Handsome. Successful. Charming.

The priest smiled warmly.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..."

Before he could finish, the massive chocolate Labrador lying quietly near the front pew suddenly stood up.

His name was Cooper.

Emily had rescued Cooper six years earlier after finding him abandoned beside a snowy highway. Since then, he had never left her side. He was gentle, obedient, and so calm that everyone joked he was "the best-behaved dog in town."

Until this moment.

Without warning, Cooper sprinted down the aisle.

Gasps echoed through the church.

Instead of running to Emily...

He planted himself directly between Emily and Daniel.

His deep growl echoed through the silent sanctuary.

Daniel forced an awkward laugh.

"Someone should take him outside."

But Cooper didn't move.

His eyes stayed locked on Daniel.

Then he barked.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Louder each time.

Emily frowned.

"Cooper... what's wrong?"

The dog ignored her command.

His ears flattened.

His muscles tightened.

It wasn't fear.

It was a warning.

Daniel's smile slowly disappeared.

"Emily, this is embarrassing."

"I know..." she whispered, confused. "He's never acted like this before."

One of the guests reached for Cooper's collar.

The dog stepped back...

Never taking his eyes off Daniel.

A strange silence settled over the church.

Then something even stranger happened.

Cooper suddenly lunged—not to bite Daniel—but toward Daniel's black leather briefcase resting beside the front pew.

The briefcase crashed onto the marble floor.

Its lock burst open.

Papers scattered across the aisle.

Daniel's face instantly turned pale.

He rushed forward, desperately trying to gather everything before anyone could read it.

But one sheet floated gently to Emily's feet.

She picked it up.

At first, she smiled, assuming it was another wedding document.

Then...

Her smile vanished.

The paper wasn't a wedding contract.

It was a life insurance policy.

The insured person?

Emily Carter.

The beneficiary?

Daniel Brooks.

Coverage amount:

Five million dollars.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She looked up at the man she was seconds away from marrying.

Daniel wasn't looking at her.

He was staring at the document in her shaking hands...

With a look of pure terror.

And Cooper...

May you like

Wouldn't stop growling.

To be continued...
