CHAPTER 5: THE OFFICER PULLED THE TRIGGER... BUT THE DOG MADE A CHOICE THAT SAVED HER LIFE

Emily couldn't believe what she was seeing.
Officer Ryan...
The man who had promised to protect her...
Was pointing a gun directly at her.
"Drop the key," he ordered, his voice frighteningly calm.
"Ryan... what are you doing?" Emily whispered.
"You lied to me?"
Ryan sighed.
"I never lied."
"I just never told you who I really worked for."
Behind him, the masked intruders lowered their weapons.
Not because they trusted him...
But because he was clearly their leader.
Cooper stood in front of Emily, growling so fiercely that even the armed men hesitated.
Ryan looked at the dog with annoyance.
"I always hated that mutt."
Emily clutched the old brass key tightly.
"My mother knew this would happen, didn't she?"
Ryan smiled.
"Your mother knew everything."
"And that's exactly why she had to disappear."
Emily's heart nearly stopped.
"My mother..."
"You told me she died."
Ryan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"She ran."
"And she's been hiding from us for seventeen years."
Emily felt the room spinning.
Everything she believed about her family was a lie.
Suddenly—
Cooper barked.
Not at Ryan.
At one of the masked men standing behind him.
The man nervously shifted his weight.
Then Emily noticed it.
A tattoo on his wrist.
A black wolf inside a silver circle.
The exact same symbol that appeared in the old photograph found inside Daniel's safe.
Ryan noticed Emily staring.
He smiled.
"Welcome to the Black Wolf Society."
"We don't steal money."
"We erase families."
Emily backed toward the window.
"What do you want from me?"
Ryan stepped closer.
"The key."
"It opens a vault beneath Blackwood Manor."
"A vault your grandfather spent forty years protecting."
Emily stared in disbelief.
"My grandfather was just a history professor."
Ryan laughed.
"That's what he wanted everyone to believe."
"He wasn't protecting history."
"He was protecting evidence."
Evidence...
Capable of destroying some of the most powerful people in the country.
Ryan raised his pistol.
"This is your last chance."
Emily closed her eyes.
Then...
She opened her hand.
Ryan smiled.
"So you finally understand."
But instead of handing him the key...
Emily threw it through the broken bedroom window.
The tiny brass key disappeared into the darkness below.
"No!"
Ryan screamed.
At that exact second...
Cooper launched himself through the shattered window after it.
Everyone rushed toward the opening.
Outside...
The loyal Labrador landed safely in the bushes.
The key was clenched tightly between his teeth.
Ryan fired.
BANG!
Emily screamed.
Cooper stumbled...
But kept running.
Blood stained his golden fur as he disappeared into the forest behind the house.
Ryan cursed and shouted to his men.
"Forget the girl!"
"Find the dog!"
Within seconds, every masked attacker vanished into the darkness.
Emily collapsed to the floor, sobbing.
She had lost everything.
Daniel.
Her wedding.
Her family.
And now...
Maybe Cooper.
But miles away, deep inside the forest...
The injured Labrador crawled beneath an abandoned wooden cabin.
An old woman stepped out, carrying a lantern.
The moment she saw Cooper holding the brass key...
Tears filled her eyes.
She whispered the words no one had expected to hear.
"My brave boy..."
"You finally found your way back to me."
Cooper gently laid the key at her feet.
The old woman looked toward the distant lights of the city.
Then removed the hood covering her face.
Emily had spent seventeen years believing her mother was dead.
She wasn't.
May you like
She had been waiting for this night all along.
To be continued...
