Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the PayrollThree weeks passed.

Tilda’s life had undergone a seismic shift that felt like living inside a surreal, high-budget movie. Her new office on the thirtieth floor of the Vale Global Tower in downtown Chicago overlooked the entire frozen Loop. The desk was made of solid mahogany, the chair was ergonomic perfection, and her job description—officially titled Director of Community Outreach—was essentially to manage the millions of dollars Damon funneled into neighborhood clinics, scholarship funds, and youth programs in Pilsen and River North.
She had secured the best medical specialists for her younger brother, Leo, whose chronic asthma was finally under control. She had bought a new winter coat—one that actually kept out the sub-zero Chicago winds.
Yet, sitting at her grand desk, Tilda couldn't shake a lingering sense of unease.
She quickly learned that while Damon Vale had legitimized ninety percent of his business empire, the remaining ten percent was a snake pit of rival factions, corrupt politicians, and federal agents who were always watching.
A sharp knock broke her concentration.
The door pushed open, and Viktor walked in, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with a red confidential seal.
"Morning, Tilda," Viktor grunted, tossing the envelope onto her desk.
"Morning, Viktor. What's this?" she asked, eyeing the red stamp.
"Security audit from the docks. Since the boss took over Marcone’s territory three weeks ago, our shipping manifests have been clean. Too clean." Viktor crossed his massive arms, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl. "Someone’s been altering the cargo weights at Terminal 4. We’re losing half a million dollars in high-tech microchips every week, and our internal tracking system says the leak is coming from inside the Vale tower."
Tilda sat up straight. "Inside the tower? You mean someone on our payroll is stealing from Damon?"
"Worse," Viktor said grimly. "They’re selling intelligence to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, specifically to a task force led by Agent Marcus Vance. Vance has been trying to take down Damon for a decade. If he gets his hands on these altered manifests, he can link our legitimate charity fronts to the old syndicate accounts."
Tilda’s stomach dropped. "Does Damon know?"
"The boss is in Geneva meeting with our European partners until tomorrow morning," Viktor replied. "Until he gets back, you’re the only person he left in charge of security clearance audits for the outreach division. I need you to run the electronic badges for everyone who accessed Terminal 4."
Tilda opened the envelope, scanning the digital logs. Rows of employee identification numbers scrolled across her screen. Most of them belonged to warehouse managers and logistics coordinators.
Then, her eyes landed on a single anomaly.
A badge ID registered under the Community Outreach Foundation had accessed the secure terminal at 2:00 AM two nights ago.
The name attached to the badge made Tilda’s breath catch in her throat.
Elena Vance.
Tilda stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. Elena Vance was her own senior assistant—a quiet, hardworking young woman who had helped Tilda organize the Pilsen youth clinic outreach program just last week.
"Viktor..." Tilda whispered, her voice trembling. "Elena is Agent Marcus Vance’s daughter."
Before Viktor could draw his weapon, the overhead lights in the office suddenly flickered and died.
The emergency backup generators kicked in a second later, bathing the room in a dull, eerie red glow.

Simultaneously, the digital screen on Tilda’s computer flashed red, overriding all security protocols with a single blinking text message:
“CHECK THE LOBBY, MS. BARON. THE WAR ISN'T OVER.”
