Chapter 10 - The Final Ledger and the Unexpected Twist

Arthur Foster swallowed hard, shrinking back as Adriano descended the stairs with slow, deliberate steps—each footfall sounding like a death sentence.
"Mr. Falcone," Arthur stammered, holding up his hands defensively. "I'm family. I'm her father. Surely we can—"
"You aren't family," Adriano interrupted, stopping two feet away from the older man. The height difference alone was enough to dwarf Arthur, but the sheer aura of lethal menace made Adriano look like a titan. "You are a parasite. You faked your death to escape a ten-thousand-dollar gambling debt, leaving your children to shoulder fifty times that amount. And then you had the staggering stupidity to walk onto my property and threaten my wife."
"Adriano, wait," Dileia stepped forward, her hand gently touching his arm.
Adriano looked down at her, his expression softening by a fraction. "Dileia, you don't have to watch this."
"I do," she said, her voice steady and hard as diamond. She looked straight at her trembling father. "He doesn't get to walk away this time. Not with stories, not with lies."
She turned back to Adriano. "Where do men like my father go when they think they can cheat the syndicate?"
Adriano’s lips curved into a cold, dangerous smile. He pulled a heavy gold-plated pocket watch from his vest and clicked it open.
"There's a cargo ship leaving for South America in two hours," Adriano said smoothly, not breaking eye contact with Arthur. "It needs men in the engine room. Hard labor. No pay, just enough bread and water to keep them breathing until they hit international waters. For every dollar he tried to extort from you, he works off an hour down there."
Arthur let out a choking cry and lunged toward the door, but two of Adriano’s enforcers materialized from the shadows of the hallway, pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.
"You can't do this!" Arthur screamed as they dragged him across the polished marble. "I'm her father! Let me go!"
"You stopped being her father the day you walked out," Adriano said coldly, watching him disappear through the double doors.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, sealing away the last ghost of Dileia's past.
The silence returned to the foyer, heavier and warmer this time. Dileia stood looking at the spot where her father had vanished, feeling the last remaining chain of her old life shatter into dust.
Adriano stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his breath warm against her skin.
"Is it over?" he murmured softly.
Dileia leaned back against him, closing her eyes as a genuine, unburdened smile finally broke across her face. She reached up and placed her hand over his.

"It's over," she whispered, turning in his arms to look up into the gray eyes of the man who had bought her debt, stolen her heart, and rewritten her world. "Now... write me a new contract."
Adriano chuckled, his grip tightening around her as the Boston sun broke through the clouds, bathing them both in gold. "There are no more contracts, Dileia. Only us."
