Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Park

The woman running toward them didn’t look like a stranger. As she drew closer, her breath catching in her throat, Aaron felt a cold shock of recognition ripple through his chest. The faded elegance of her trench coat, the sharp, defensive posture, and those piercing green eyes—it was Elena Vance.
Seven years ago, Elena had been the brilliant, rising star at Vale Strategic Consulting. She was the only analyst who dared to look Aaron in the eye and tell him when his logic was flawed. She was also the only woman he had ever let past his armor. Then, at the height of a high-stakes corporate takeover, she had vanished overnight, leaving no forwarding address, no resignation letter, and a void in Aaron’s life that he had spent the last seven years trying to fill with work and marble penthouses.
"Iris! Get away from him right now!" Elena gasped, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and fierce protectiveness. She scooped the little girl up into her arms, glaring at Aaron as if he were a predator rather than the man she used to share coffee with in the quiet hours before the trading bell rang.
Aaron stood up slowly, the polished billionaire facade instantly locking into place, though his heart was hammering against his ribs. "Elena? It’s been seven years. Is this how you say hello?"
Elena stepped back, clutching Iris tighter. The little girl looked between them, her brown eyes wide with confusion. "Mommy, you know the lonely mister?"
"We’re leaving, Iris," Elena said sharply, refusing to look Aaron in the eye. "We don't talk to men like him."
"Men like me?" Aaron countered, stepping out from under the shadow of the oak tree. "You disappeared without a trace, Elena. You nearly ruined the firm's biggest merger, and you left me questioning everything. Now you show up in Central Park with a daughter who is..." He stopped, the math suddenly violently colliding in his head.
Iris was six. Seven years ago, Elena had vanished.
"Elena," Aaron whispered, the air leaving his lungs. "How old is she? Exactly."
Elena’s face went pale, a ghost of panic flitting across her features before she hardened into ice. "She is none of your business, Aaron. Stay away from us. If I see you near my daughter again, I’ll call the police."
She turned on her heel and hurried away, Iris’s small face looking back over her mother’s shoulder, her yellow ribbons fluttering in the wind. Aaron stood frozen, the noise of Manhattan rushing back over him like a tidal wave.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was Richard Hale. Aaron answered it, his voice deadly quiet. "Richard. Run a background check on Elena Vance. Find out where she lives, where her daughter goes to school, and what she’s been doing for the last seven years. Now."
On the other end of the line, Richard paused, his tone dropping into something dark and calculated. "Elena Vance? Aaron, you need to let that ghost stay buried. You don't know what you're digging up."
