Chapter 3 - The Safe Box in the Floorboards

Twenty-four hours later, against medical advice, I checked myself out of the hospital. Staying in that bed made me a sitting duck.

Detective Vance assigned a patrol car to escort me back to my grandfather’s old farmhouse—the property Marcus had been desperately trying to steal from me since the day we said 'I do.'

The sun was setting behind the pine trees, casting long, ink-black shadows across the front porch. The house had been abandoned since my grandfather passed away three years ago, but it held the one thing Marcus didn't know existed: the original land deeds and my grandfather’s personal journals.

“Are you sure you want to be here alone, Clara?” the deputy asked, idling his engine near the gravel driveway.

“I need ten minutes,” I said, clutching my pregnant belly with one arm. “Just wait at the gate.”

I stepped inside the musty living room. Dust motes danced in the pale moonlight. I walked straight to the library, pulled back the faded Persian rug, and used a claw hammer from the kitchen drawer to pry up the third floorboard from the fireplace.

Inside lay a heavy steel firebox.

My hands trembled as I dialed the combination—my birthday, the code my grandfather had chosen before he died. The heavy lock clicked open.

Inside wasn't just paper. Inside were dozens of photographs, bank receipts dating back twenty years, and a birth certificate that didn't belong to me.

I pulled out the birth certificate, reading the yellowed parchment under the faint beam of my flashlight.

Mother: Evelyn Hayes. Child: Marcus Hayes. Father: Arthur Vance.

My heart stopped in my chest. Arthur Vance was my grandfather.

Marcus wasn't just my abusive husband. He was my half-brother.
