Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

Three hours later, inside the delivery room at St. Jude’s Hospital, the quiet room was broken by a clear, sharp cry.
“It’s a girl,” the doctor announced, placing the tiny, pristine baby on my chest.
I held her close, weeping quietly as her small fingers wrapped around my thumb. She was healthy, untainted by the dark mud and madness that had tried to swallow us both.
Detective Vance stepped into the delivery room an hour later, closing the door behind her. She looked exhausted, but a triumphant smile played on her lips.
“Evelyn spilled everything during interrogation,” Vance said, sitting in the chair beside my bed. “Once Marcus realized she had lied to him about his entire life, he turned state’s evidence. He gave us the location of two buried bodies on their main property—former business partners who tried to black mail them.”
“And Mara?” I asked gently, stroking my daughter’s dark hair.
“Facing twenty years for attempted murder and conspiracy,” Vance replied. “They’re all going away for the rest of their lives.”
Vance leaned in closer, her expression turning serious. “There’s just one thing I don't understand, Clara. We pulled your grandfather’s true medical records from forty years ago.”

I paused, looking up from my baby.
“Arthur Vance had a vasectomy in 1980,” Vance whispered. “Two years before Marcus was born. Marcus wasn't Arthur’s son. Evelyn fabricated the whole story, including the birth certificate, to trick Marcus into obeying her every command out of a sense of twisted, vengeful purpose.”
