Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

"Ethan!" Robert screamed, sprinting back to his SUV. "Drive! Get back to the penthouse! Now!"

The drive back to Tribeca was a blur of running red lights and screaming sirens. Robert’s mind raced with absolute panic. He had built an empire of concrete, steel, and gold, but none of it could protect his son from a ghost.

When they burst into the penthouse, weapons drawn, the apartment was dead silent.

The security guards stationed at the door were unconscious on the floor, breathing but completely unresponsive.

Robert threw open Ethan’s bedroom door.

Ethan was sitting up in bed, his eyes wide with fear. The girl, Lily, was standing at the foot of his bed. She wasn't holding a weapon. She was holding Ethan’s hand.

"Dad!" Ethan cried. "She didn't hurt me! She... she made the pain stop."

Robert stopped, his chest heaving. He gestured for Marcus and the guards to hold their fire.

"Why are you doing this?" Robert asked Lily, his voice cracking. "If you want the Geneva files, I’ll give them to you. I'll sign them over right now. Just don't hurt my boy."

Lily looked at Robert. For the first time, her electric-blue eyes softened, showing a flicker of genuine, human sadness.

"I don't want to hurt him, Robert," she said, her voice sounding younger, more fragile. "But my creators are dying. The people who made me, the scientists you ruined when you shut down Apex Biotech... they are being hunted. Someone else wanted the Lazarus Project. Someone much more dangerous than you."

"Who?" Robert asked, stunned.

"The board of directors of your own company," Lily said.

Robert froze. "What?"

"The Dover acquisition you are closing tomorrow," Lily explained, her hand still holding Ethan’s. "It’s not an investment firm. Dover is a front for a black-budget military contractor. Your board members—the men you think work for you—have already sold the Lazarus patents to them. They didn't want you to find out. They are the ones who caused Ethan’s 'accident' five years ago."

Robert felt the room tilt. "No... that’s impossible. The accident... it was a ski slope. An icy turn."
