Chapter 2 - Blood in the Rearview

"Get down!" Daniel bellowed, throwing his massive frame across the backseat to shield Noah and me as glass shattered into a million sparkling diamonds across the leather upholstery.

The world erupted into chaos.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

Silenced gunfire. Professional. Clean. Lethal.

"Marcus, status!" Daniel shouted over the roar of the twin-turbo engine as the G-Wagon swerved violently into oncoming traffic, horns blaring in protest.

"Two bikes on our tail! A Yamaha and a Ducati, both carrying riders with suppressed submachine guns!" Marcus yelled back, his fingers flying across the console as he engaged the vehicle's defensive countermeasures. "They’re trying to box us in before we hit the bridge!"

I squeezed my eyes shut, wrapping my arms so tightly around Noah that he let out a muffled squeak of protest. I pressed his head into the crook of my neck, whispering frantic, silent prayers against his soft curls.

What have I done?

Every choice I made over the past four years—every late-night move, every fake Social Security number, every lonely Christmas spent eating canned soup in a drafty apartment—flashed before my eyes. I thought I was protecting him. But by hiding him from Daniel, I had left him blind, unarmed, and completely vulnerable to the monsters who ruled the underworld.

"Look at me, El," Daniel’s voice cut through the ringing in my ears.

I opened my eyes. Daniel was bleeding, a jagged line of crimson trickling down his cheek from where a shard of flying glass had grazed him. But he didn't care about his own wound. His entire focus was locked onto my face, desperate and terrifyingly fierce.

"If we don't make it to the safehouse, what do I need to know about him?" Daniel asked, his voice raw. "Allergies? Fears? Anything."

I stared at him, a hysterical laugh bubbling up in my throat. "You’ve known he exists for exactly five minutes, and you're doing background checks?"

"He’s my blood, Emily," Daniel snarled, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched. "And right now, someone is trying to drain that blood onto the pavement. Tell me!"

"He’s allergic to penicillin!" I shouted back over the screech of tires as Marcus drifted the massive SUV around a sharp corner, narrowly missing a delivery truck. "He hates the dark, and he needs his blue plush rabbit to sleep!"

Daniel nodded once, his expression sharpening into a cold, terrifying calculation. He reached beneath the center console, sliding open a hidden panel to reveal a matte-black Glock 19 and two spare magazines. He checked the chamber with a practiced, fluid motion that reminded me painfully of why I had run from him in the first place.

This man was death incarnate. But today, he was our only shield.

"Marcus, take the maintenance tunnel beneath the waterfront," Daniel ordered. "Vance expects us to head for the Interstate. Let's give him a surprise."

"Copy that, Boss."

The G-Wagon plunged downward, the sudden descent into the dark, damp concrete tunnel throwing my stomach into my throat. The wailing sirens of our pursuers echoed faintly behind us, then faded as we vanished into the subterranean maze.

In the sudden gloom, the car grew eerily quiet, save for the ragged breathing of four people trapped in a steel cage, waiting for the war to begin.
