Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

The private jet touched down on a private airstrip outside Las Vegas under the cover of a pitch-black midnight sky.

We hadn't fled. We had counterattacked.

While Vance thought we were running scared toward the Canadian border, Daniel had used his secure satellite network to rally the loyalist capos across the country. Within twelve hours, the syndicate was purged of every traitor on Vance’s payroll.

And now, Victor Vance was waiting for us in an abandoned desert warehouse just off the strip.

"Stay in the SUV with Marcus," Daniel said, turning back from the front seat as the armored vehicle rolled to a stop outside the derelict building.

I looked at him, my hand resting on his arm. "Daniel. Let me come in with you."

He looked at Noah, who was finally fast asleep in the backseat, clutching his blue rabbit against his chest, completely exhausted by the whirlwind of the last twenty-four hours.

"No," Daniel said softly, placing his hand over mine. "This part is mine to finish. When I come back out, this war is over. Forever. You and Noah will never have to look over your shoulder again. I promise you."

Before I could argue, he opened the door and stepped out into the howling desert wind.

I watched through the bulletproof window as Daniel walked toward the warehouse doors alone, flanked only by the terrifying aura of a king reclaiming his throne.

Ten minutes passed.

Ten agonizing, eternity-long minutes where every tick of the clock felt like a countdown to doom.

Then, the warehouse doors swung open.

A single figure stepped out into the floodlights.

Daniel.

His jacket was torn, his knuckles bruised and bloodied, but he was walking upright, his head held high. Behind him, two of his loyal men dragged a bound and beaten Victor Vance out into the dirt.

My breath caught in my throat.

The door of our SUV clicked open, and Daniel slid back into the seat beside me, pulling the heavy door shut against the desert wind.

He looked at me, exhausted, battered, but smiling with a fierce, blinding relief.

"It’s over, El," he whispered, resting his forehead gently against mine. "Vance is gone. The council has reinstated my authority. Nobody will ever touch you or our boy again."

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for four long, terrifying years. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as he wrapped his strong arms around both Noah and me, pulling us into a single, unbreakable embrace.
