CHAPTER 2: THE BASEMENT WHERE SHE THOUGHT NO ONE COULD HEAR

The first snowstorm arrived before dawn.

Daniel left early for what Marissa claimed was an important business meeting.

Only it wasn't.

She had arranged it herself.

The moment his truck disappeared down the driveway, her smile vanished.

"Get up."

Margaret blinked blankly.

Marissa grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

"You heard me."

Margaret allowed herself to stumble.

The basement stairs were cold concrete.

Each step echoed like a countdown.

At the bottom sat an old folding chair.

A single lightbulb swung slowly overhead.

Marissa shoved Margaret into the chair.

"I've been patient long enough."

She lit a cigarette.

The orange tip glowed brighter as she stepped closer.

"You know what's funny?"

Margaret stared silently.

"My husband still thinks you're worth saving."

She laughed.

"He cries after putting you to bed."

Another laugh.

"But after today..."

She leaned close enough for Margaret to smell expensive perfume mixed with tobacco.

"...everything becomes mine."

The burning cigarette pressed against Margaret's forearm.

The smell of scorched skin filled the room.

"You crazy old hag."

Another burn.

"Eat."

She dumped dog food into a metal bowl.

"That's all you're worth now."

Margaret didn't scream.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't beg.

Instead...

Her thumb quietly pressed against the underside of the medical bracelet.

One tiny click.

No louder than a heartbeat.

Forty miles away...

Sheriff Paul Reeve's phone vibrated.

EMERGENCY ACTIVATED.

LIVE AUDIO RECEIVING.

He listened.

Marissa's voice poured through the speaker.

"I'm tired of waiting for you to die."

Paul's face hardened.

He grabbed his radio.

"Move."

Within seconds, three sheriff vehicles, two state investigators, and an ambulance sped toward the Dawson estate.

Back in the basement...

Marissa wasn't finished.

She opened a folder.

Inside were forged documents already carrying Margaret's fake signature.

"Once Daniel signs today..."

She smiled.

"...you'll disappear into a nursing home where nobody asks questions."

Then she whispered the sentence that destroyed her future.

"I've been poisoning your tea for months."

Margaret slowly raised her head.

For the first time in six months...

Her cloudy eyes became razor sharp.

She spoke in a calm, steady voice.

"No..."

Marissa froze.

"...you've been confessing."

A thunderous crash exploded upstairs.

The front door shattered inward.

"SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT!"

Heavy boots pounded through the house.

Marissa turned toward the stairs.

Her smile disappeared.

The basement door flew open.

Sheriff Paul stood there.

Behind him—

Detectives.

Paramedics.

Two homicide investigators.

And Daniel...

Holding a duplicate set of property records.

His face had gone completely white.

May you like

He had heard...

Everything.
