CHAPTER 9 — THE LAST FILE

The message lasted only four seconds.

Then every screen went black.

Cybersecurity teams rushed into the room.

No trace.

No source.

No explanation.

Whoever had accessed the system had vanished without leaving a footprint.

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

"Could it be your mother?"

She slowly shook her head.

"No."

"My mother wouldn't hide."

"She'd come for me."

An intelligence analyst burst through the doorway carrying a newly recovered archive.

"We found another backup."

Nathan immediately opened it.

Inside was only one video.

Recorded twenty-seven years earlier.

The image cleared.

A young Colonel Nathan Cross appeared on screen, carrying a sleeping infant wrapped in a military blanket.

The baby's tiny hand gripped his finger.

Nathan's voice from the recording was gentle.

"If anything happens to me..."

"...tell Grace she was loved before she was ever used."

Present-day Nathan covered his face.

He had no memory of recording it.

Project Vulture had taken more than his daughter.

It had taken pieces of his own past.

The video ended.

One final frame appeared.

A map.

Not of a military base.

Not of a laboratory.

A remote mountain observatory abandoned decades earlier.

Pinned beneath the map was a handwritten note.

THE TRUTH DIDN'T SURVIVE HERE.

SHE DID.

Evelyn folded the map carefully.

Nathan looked at her.

"You don't have to go."

She smiled faintly.

"I've spent my whole life running from ghosts."

She looked toward the distant mountains beyond the window.

"It's time one of them answered."

Far away, in a snow-covered observatory hidden above the clouds, a lone woman watched the sunrise through cracked glass.

She placed an old photograph of a little girl beside a radio transmitter.

The woman whispered with a hopeful smile,

"Come home, Grace."

And for the first time in twenty-seven years...

May you like

Someone answered.

"I'm on my way."
