CHAPTER 9 — The Man Erased From Every Photograph

Three days after the scholarship trust was announced, Lexington Tower became the symbol of a new era in corporate America.

News crews camped outside the building.

Universities called, offering partnerships.

Parents wrote thousands of letters thanking Evelyn Carter.

But inside the archive beneath the tower...

Evelyn couldn't stop thinking about one thing.

The photograph.

The one Daniel had enlarged after reviewing every image from William Carter's collection.

In dozens of pictures, William Carter stood beside Samuel Hawthorne.

But in several of them...

Someone had been deliberately cut out.

Not torn.

Not damaged by age.

Carefully removed with scissors.

As if someone wanted history to forget he had ever existed.

Jonathan examined the edges.

"This wasn't accidental."

Rebecca looked puzzled.

"Who would erase a person from every photograph?"

Evelyn answered quietly.

"Someone who feared the truth."

Just then, Daniel rushed into the archive carrying a folder.

"We found something."

Inside was an old payroll ledger from 1985.

Every employee's name appeared in perfect order.

Architects.

Engineers.

Accountants.

Electricians.

Security guards.

Then...

A gap.

Employee #003.

The name had been completely covered with black ink.

Jonathan's heartbeat quickened.

"It wasn't crossed out later."

"It was professionally erased."

Rebecca whispered,

"Someone wanted this person to disappear."

Suddenly every light in the archive flickered.

The security monitors went black.

Daniel reached for his radio.

No signal.

Then footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Slow.

Confident.

Not hiding.

An elderly man in a dark overcoat stepped into the archive.

Silver hair.

Straight posture.

Sharp blue eyes.

He looked directly at Evelyn.

"I've waited forty years for this door to open."

No one moved.

Jonathan stared at the stranger in disbelief.

"It can't be..."

The man smiled faintly.

"My name..."

"...is Thomas Mercer."

Rebecca frowned.

"I've never heard of you."

The old man looked toward William's portrait.

"No."

"Because William made sure you never would."

Daniel instinctively stepped between him and Evelyn.

"What do you want?"

Thomas slowly removed a faded photograph from his coat.

It was the original version.

No faces had been cut away.

There stood William Carter.

Samuel Hawthorne.

And Thomas Mercer.

The three founders of Lexington.

The room fell silent.

Jonathan's voice cracked.

"There were..."

"...three founders?"

Thomas nodded.

"I built this company beside them."

"Until one decision destroyed our friendship."

He looked at Evelyn with deep sadness.

"William never told you the whole story."

Evelyn whispered,

"What decision?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"The decision that cost my daughter her life."

The room froze.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

May you like

Daniel tightened his grip on the photograph.

Everything they believed about Lexington's history had just changed.
