CHAPTER 3 — The Envelope That Could Destroy Everything

Valeria stood perfectly still.

The laughter.

The music.

The clinking champagne glasses...

All faded into the background.

Her fingers tightened around the cream-colored envelope.

It felt surprisingly heavy.

Not because of its weight...

But because of the way Camila had reacted.

For the first time that evening...

Her younger sister looked genuinely afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not annoyed.

Terrified.

"Valeria!"

Her mother's voice snapped through the crowd.

"There you are!"

Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed Valeria's arm.

"Come meet Senator Mendoza and his wife."

"They've been asking about you."

Valeria quietly slipped the envelope into her evening purse.

"Of course."

She smiled politely.

No one noticed.

Except Camila.

From across the garden...

Camila watched every movement.

Her forced smile slowly disappeared.

The rehearsal dinner continued.

Guests toasted the bride and groom.

The orchestra played romantic classics.

Professional photographers captured every carefully staged moment.

The Rivera family looked perfect.

Exactly the way they always wanted.

But beneath the surface...

Cracks were beginning to spread.

Every few minutes...

Valeria caught Camila staring at her purse.

Almost as if...

The envelope itself were a ticking bomb.

An hour later...

Valeria excused herself.

"I'll be right back."

She walked through the long stone hallway of the hacienda.

Past antique mirrors.

Past candlelit corridors.

Until she reached a quiet terrace overlooking the gardens.

Finally alone.

She took a deep breath.

Then opened the envelope.

Inside...

There were only three things.

A folded letter.

A USB flash drive.

And...

A hospital bracelet.

Her heart skipped a beat.

The bracelet was old.

Yellowed with age.

Printed across the faded plastic were only a few words.

Rivera Family Hospital

Baby Girl

October 18

No name.

Just one detail...

The date.

Valeria froze.

October 18.

Her birthday.

With trembling hands...

She unfolded the letter.

It wasn't signed.

It had clearly been typed on an old computer.

The first sentence made her blood run cold.

"If you are reading this... your parents have lied to you for twenty-six years."

Valeria stopped breathing.

She continued reading.

"The woman you call your sister knows the truth."

"Your mother knows the truth."

"Your father paid millions to bury the truth."

"You deserve to know who you really are."

Valeria's vision blurred.

Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.

What was this?

Some sick joke?

Or...

Something much worse?

The letter instructed her not to confront anyone immediately.

Instead...

It told her to watch the video stored on the USB drive.

Alone.

Only after midnight.

Then...

One final sentence.

"Tomorrow's wedding should never happen unless everyone learns the truth."

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Before Valeria could think...

She heard footsteps behind her.

She quickly slipped everything back into the envelope.

Camila.

She looked pale.

Almost unable to breathe.

"Can we talk?"

Valeria crossed her arms.

"I'm listening."

Camila glanced around nervously.

"You..."

"You shouldn't believe whatever's in that envelope."

Valeria said nothing.

Camila stepped closer.

"It's fake."

"Someone wants to ruin my wedding."

Still...

Valeria remained silent.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally Camila whispered...

"Please..."

"...don't open the USB."

That single sentence told Valeria everything.

If it were fake...

Camila wouldn't know what was inside.

"How do you know there's a USB?" Valeria asked quietly.

Camila's face turned white.

For a full five seconds...

She couldn't answer.

Then she forced a nervous laugh.

"I just guessed."

"You guessed?"

"Yes."

"There could've been photographs."

"There could've been papers."

"There could've been jewelry."

"But you guessed..."

"...a USB."

Camila realized her mistake.

She looked trapped.

"I..."

"I have to go."

She hurried away without another word.

Valeria watched her disappear.

For the first time in her life...

Her younger sister looked exactly like someone hiding a crime.

That night...

Unable to wait until midnight...

Valeria drove home with the envelope locked inside her purse.

She couldn't stop thinking.

What secret could possibly make Camila panic like that?

She plugged the USB into her laptop.

The screen remained black for several seconds.

Then...

A single video file appeared.

FAMILY_ARCHIVE_2000.mp4

She clicked play.

Static.

The image slowly came into focus.

It was old home-video footage.

Someone was filming inside a hospital room.

The timestamp read:

October 18, 2000.

Her birthday.

The camera shook slightly.

Then...

A familiar voice laughed.

Her mother's voice.

Twenty-six years younger.

Holding...

A newborn baby.

But something immediately felt wrong.

The woman behind the camera suddenly said:

"Congratulations..."

"...your second daughter is beautiful."

Second daughter?

Valeria frowned.

She had always believed she was the oldest.

Confused...

She watched her mother answer.

"No..."

"This one isn't staying."

Valeria's entire body went numb.

Then...

The recording abruptly ended.

Only twelve seconds long.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Just one sentence...

That shattered everything she thought she knew.

"This one isn't staying."

Valeria stared at the frozen screen.

Unable to move.

Unable to think.

She whispered only one question.

"If that baby wasn't staying..."

"...then who was she?"

Behind her apartment door...

Someone quietly turned the doorknob.

It wasn't locked.

The door slowly opened.

And a shadow stepped inside.

Someone else...

Had come looking for the USB.
