CHAPTER 4 — The Midnight Intruder

The apartment door opened...

So quietly...

Most people would never have noticed.

But Valeria had spent years living alone.

She recognized every sound in her apartment.

The click of the lock.

The creak of the wooden floor.

The faint rush of cool air drifting in from the hallway.

Someone was inside.

She immediately pressed the space bar.

The video froze.

Without thinking, she pulled the USB from her laptop and slipped it into her pocket.

Her heartbeat pounded in her ears.

"Who's there?" she called.

Silence.

Then...

A familiar voice.

"It's me."

Camila.

Valeria slowly walked into the living room.

Her younger sister stood just inside the doorway.

Still wearing the elegant rehearsal dinner dress.

Mascara smudged.

Hair slightly out of place.

She looked nothing like the confident bride from only an hour earlier.

She looked terrified.

"You forgot to lock your door," Camila whispered.

Valeria folded her arms.

"Why are you here?"

Camila glanced toward the laptop.

"You watched it..."

It wasn't a question.

Valeria didn't answer.

Camila closed her eyes.

"I knew you would."

For several seconds...

Neither sister spoke.

Finally Valeria asked the question that had been burning inside her.

"What did Mom mean?"

"This one isn't staying."

Camila's lips trembled.

"I can't explain."

"You can."

"I promised."

"You promised who?"

Camila looked toward the floor.

"Dad."

Valeria's stomach tightened.

"So you knew."

No answer.

"So you've known..."

"...for years."

Camila slowly nodded.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I found out when I was sixteen."

"You let me live a lie."

"I didn't know what to do."

"You could've told me."

"They would've destroyed me."

Valeria laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the truth was becoming unbearable.

"They spent my whole life criticizing my body..."

"...while hiding something much bigger."

Camila whispered,

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

Instead...

Camila reached into her designer handbag.

She removed an old photograph.

Unlike the polished family portraits displayed in the Rivera mansion...

This one had never been edited.

It showed their parents...

Standing inside a hospital room.

Their father looked twenty years younger.

Their mother was holding...

Two newborn babies.

Twins.

Valeria's hands began to shake.

"There were two of us..."

Camila nodded.

"Yes."

"No..."

Valeria whispered.

"This has to be fake."

"It isn't."

"Our parents had twins."

"You..."

"...and another baby."

Valeria stared at the picture.

"But where am I?"

Camila swallowed hard.

"That's the problem."

"There are two babies in that picture."

"But only one grew up in the Rivera mansion."

Valeria's breathing became shallow.

"What happened?"

Camila burst into tears.

"I don't know everything."

"I swear."

"But I heard them arguing."

"Years ago."

She wiped her eyes.

"Mom kept saying she couldn't love both babies."

"Dad kept saying one child would ruin everything."

Valeria frowned.

"Ruin what?"

Camila hesitated.

Then quietly answered.

"The inheritance."

The room fell silent.

Inheritance?

That made no sense.

Their parents owned more money than anyone could spend in several lifetimes.

Why would another child matter?

Camila looked completely defeated.

"There's something else."

Valeria almost didn't want to hear it.

"What?"

"Dad changed Grandpa's will."

Valeria stared.

"What are you talking about?"

"Our grandfather left everything..."

"...under one condition."

"What condition?"

Camila closed her eyes.

"The Rivera fortune had to be divided equally among every biological child."

Valeria froze.

Every biological child.

Not just one.

Not the favorite.

Every child.

"If there were twins..."

"...everything would have been split."

Camila nodded.

"Exactly."

Suddenly...

Pieces of the puzzle began falling into place.

The favoritism.

The constant criticism.

The emotional abuse.

The desperate obsession with appearances.

It had never been about her weight.

Her parents needed her to feel worthless.

Small.

Unimportant.

Someone who would never question anything.

Someone who would never ask...

Why she had been treated differently her entire life.

Valeria looked at her sister.

"Who gave me the envelope?"

Camila shook her head.

"I honestly don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I swear."

"Then who else knows?"

Camila hesitated again.

Then whispered one name.

"Aunt Teresa."

Valeria frowned.

Their father's older sister.

The aunt who had mysteriously disappeared from every family gathering nearly twenty years earlier.

Their parents always claimed she had moved abroad.

No one ever talked about her.

Ever.

"What does Aunt Teresa know?"

Camila answered so quietly...

Valeria almost didn't hear it.

"Everything."

Before Valeria could ask another question...

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

An elderly woman's voice spoke immediately.

"You opened the envelope."

Valeria's heart stopped.

"Who is this?"

"You don't have much time."

"The wedding tomorrow is only part of their plan."

"What plan?"

"If you want the truth..."

"...come to Saint Gabriel Cemetery."

"Tomorrow."

"Seven in the morning."

"Come alone."

The call disconnected.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Nothing.

Camila looked frightened.

"Who was that?"

Valeria slowly lowered the phone.

"I think..."

"...someone who's been waiting twenty-six years to tell me the truth."

She looked out the apartment window.

The first light of dawn was beginning to rise over Mexico City.

In less than twelve hours...

Her sister would walk down the aisle.

But before that happened...

Valeria was going to visit a cemetery.

To meet a stranger.

And possibly uncover the secret that had shaped her entire life.

She had no idea...

That beneath one forgotten gravestone...

A document had been hidden for over two decades.

A document that didn't just expose a family lie...

It accused someone in the Rivera family...

Of committing a crime.
