CHAPTER 1: THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE

The auditorium buzzed with excitement as thousands of spectators filled every seat beneath the dazzling stage lights. Another episode of the nation's biggest talent competition had begun, and the audience expected to witness singers with breathtaking voices, dancers performing gravity-defying routines, and magicians capable of impossible illusions.

Nobody expected the contestant who quietly walked onto the stage next.

Barefoot.

Dressed in a simple black shirt.

With no arms.

For several seconds, complete silence swept across the theater.

Then the whispers started.

"Poor kid..."

"Someone brought him here as a joke."

"There's no way this is real."

The giant cameras zoomed in on the young man's peaceful face. He couldn't have been older than sixteen. His dark hair slightly covered his eyes, but despite thousands staring at him, he never looked frightened.

The host smiled politely.

"Welcome! What's your name?"

"My name is Diego."

The applause was weak.

Mostly sympathy.

The judges smiled awkwardly.

"So, Diego... what talent are you sharing with us today?"

Diego slowly turned toward two beautiful wooden congas standing beside a chair.

"I came to play them."

For one long second...

Nobody reacted.

Then laughter exploded across the auditorium.

Several audience members covered their mouths.

Others openly laughed.

One judge actually leaned back in his chair laughing before speaking into the microphone.

"Young man..."

"You understand those are drums... right?"

"Yes."

"You... don't have arms."

"I know."

More laughter.

A female judge tried to sound kind.

"Maybe you prepared a song instead?"

"No."

"A poem?"

"No."

"A speech?"

Diego shook his head.

"I came here to play music."

Another judge crossed his arms.

"Listen... this is a talent competition, not a place to earn sympathy."

The audience applauded.

Someone shouted,

"Next contestant!"

Phones were already recording.

Social media comments were being written before Diego had even started.

"Most embarrassing audition ever."

"What a waste of time."

"Cruel producers."

But Diego never became angry.

Instead...

He slowly walked toward the drums.

Every step echoed through the now-silent theater.

Without saying another word...

He sat down.

Bent forward.

Closed his eyes.

And then...

He removed both shoes.

The audience frowned in confusion.

Why would someone take off his shoes?

Diego lifted his bare feet onto the drum stand with unbelievable balance.

Every person in the building leaned forward.

No one understood what they were about to witness.

The room became so silent...

You could hear someone breathing in the front row.

Then Diego whispered just loudly enough for the microphone to catch:

"I didn't come here because I wanted people to feel sorry for me."

"I came because I wanted people to hear me."

He raised one foot...

And struck the first drum.

A single deep note echoed through the hall.

Nobody laughed anymore.

They had no idea that within the next ninety seconds...

May you like

Their entire understanding of human limits was about to be destroyed.
