CHAPTER 2 — The Dance That Time Couldn't Erase

No one answered.

Not even Eleanor.

She simply looked at Adrian with gentle eyes.

Then she whispered,

"You gave it to me."

The room fell completely silent.

Adrian's lips parted.

His breathing became uneven.

"That's impossible..."

"I made that costume fifty-eight years ago."

The students looked at each other in confusion.

The legendary Adrian Laurent was seventy-eight.

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"You promised we'd perform together."

"You never came."

The pianist slowly began playing an old melody.

A melody nobody in the academy recognized.

Except Adrian.

His knees nearly gave out.

Memories flooded back like a tidal wave.

Paris.

A tiny rehearsal studio.

A young woman with fiery determination.

The greatest dancer he had ever known.

Eleanor Brooks.

The woman who was supposed to become the brightest ballet star in Europe.

Until one terrible night.

A theater fire.

A collapsed stage.

Everyone believed she had died.

Adrian searched for months.

Then years.

Eventually...

He accepted the impossible.

She was gone.

But she hadn't died.

She had survived.

Barely.

The accident shattered her hip.

Destroyed her career.

Doctors told her she would never dance again.

So she disappeared.

Not because she stopped loving ballet.

Because she couldn't bear watching Adrian give up his own dream trying to save hers.

She sacrificed her future...

To protect his.

Tears rolled down Adrian's face.

The students no longer laughed.

They couldn't.

Eleanor stepped toward the center of the floor.

"My body is old."

"My legs aren't what they used to be."

"But one promise..."

"Should never grow old."

The music swelled.

Then something unbelievable happened.

She danced.

Not with impossible jumps.

Not with youthful strength.

But with breathtaking grace.

Every movement carried eighty years of joy.

Pain.

Love.

Regret.

Every step told a story words could never explain.

Halfway through the performance...

Adrian walked forward.

Slowly.

Silently.

Then...

He joined her.

For the first time in nearly sixty years...

They completed the dance they had never finished.

Nobody in the room moved.

Many students cried openly.

Phones kept recording.

Yet no video could capture what everyone felt.

When the music ended...

Adrian slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

Then both knees.

Right there.

In front of everyone.

He bowed his head.

"I'm sorry..."

"I was too late."

Eleanor gently touched his face.

"No..."

"You arrived exactly when you were supposed to."

The entire academy erupted into applause.

But the biggest surprise had not yet arrived.

Because a young lawyer had just entered the studio...

Holding a sealed envelope with Eleanor's name on it.

May you like

And what it contained would change every life inside that building forever.
