CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET HER CHILDREN WERE NEVER MEANT TO KNOW

Emily's fingers trembled as she slowly opened the yellow envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The ink had faded, but Margaret's elegant handwriting was unmistakable.

"My dear Emily..."

"If you're reading this, it means my children laughed exactly the way I knew they would."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"They believe wealth is measured by money."

"But character is measured by what you do when no one is watching."

She looked at the bundles hidden inside the mattress.

There were dozens of them.

Not just cash.

Inside each waterproof package were old bank certificates, gold coins, property deeds, and documents worth millions of dollars.

Emily gasped.

Margaret had hidden nearly twelve million dollars inside the old mattress.

But that wasn't what shocked her most.

At the bottom lay a thick black notebook.

Across the cover were four words.

PRIVATE FAMILY RECORDS.

Emily carefully opened it.

Every page contained dates, signatures, photographs, and copies of financial transfers stretching back almost thirty years.

Then she found a page marked in red.

Richard Hayes.

Margaret's eldest son.

Emily froze.

The notebook revealed that Richard had secretly stolen nearly four million dollars from the family business years earlier.

To protect the company—and her grandchildren—Margaret quietly repaid every cent herself.

She never exposed him.

Instead...

She documented everything.

Every theft.

Every forged signature.

Every lie.

The final page read:

"My children believe I never knew."

"I knew everything."

Emily covered her mouth.

Her entire body shook.

Suddenly...

Someone pounded violently on her apartment door.

BANG!

BANG!

BANG!

"Emily!"

Richard's voice echoed through the hallway.

"I know what's inside that mattress!"

Emily's heart nearly stopped.

How could he know?

She looked through the peephole.

Richard.

Diane.

Two lawyers.

And a private security guard.

Richard smiled through the door.

"Open up."

"We just want to talk."

Emily stepped backward.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She answered cautiously.

A calm elderly voice whispered,

"Don't open that door."

Emily frowned.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Samuel Brooks."

"I was Margaret's attorney before she rewrote her will."

Emily's breathing quickened.

Samuel continued.

"If Richard gets those documents..."

"...he'll destroy them."

Emily looked back toward the hidden notebook.

"What should I do?"

There was a long silence.

Then Samuel quietly said,

"Tomorrow morning..."

"...bring everything to the shareholders' meeting."

Emily frowned.

"What meeting?"

"The one Richard thinks he's about to win."

Samuel's voice turned cold.

"Tomorrow..."

"His entire empire ends."

Outside...

Richard slammed his fist against the door again.

"Emily!"

"I know you're in there!"

Emily silently switched off every light inside the apartment.

Then she hugged the notebook tightly against her chest.

For the first time...

She realized the mattress had never been the inheritance.

May you like

The truth was.
