CHAPTER 1 — The Inheritance Nobody Wanted

The day Grandma Eleanor's will was read, everyone arrived dressed in black.
Not because they were heartbroken.
Because they were already calculating how much money they were about to inherit.
The elegant office of the family attorney felt colder than a courtroom. Every relative sat with forced sadness painted across their faces, but their eyes betrayed them. They weren't mourning.
They were hunting.
Her eldest son, Richard, had already whispered to his wife about selling the family house.
Her daughter Martha quietly searched real estate prices on her phone.
Their children argued in hushed voices over Grandma's antique jewelry before the will had even been opened.
Only one person remained silent.
Twenty-six-year-old Lina.
Grandma had raised her after her parents died in a car accident. While everyone else visited only on holidays, Lina spent years cooking meals, cleaning the old farmhouse, repairing broken furniture, taking Grandma to doctor appointments, and sitting beside her bed during endless sleepless nights.
She never expected a reward.
She simply loved her grandmother.
The lawyer cleared his throat.
"I will now read the final wishes of Eleanor Whitmore."
The room fell silent.
"The farmland... goes to Richard."
Richard smiled before the sentence was even finished.
"The main residence... goes to Martha."
She squeezed her husband's hand in triumph.
"The investment accounts shall be divided equally among the remaining beneficiaries."
Small smiles spread around the room.
Then...
The lawyer paused.
"And finally..."
He adjusted his glasses.
"My beloved granddaughter Lina shall inherit..."
Everyone looked toward her.
"...the old spring mattress currently stored in the attic."
Silence.
Then laughter.
Actual laughter.
Richard leaned back in his chair.
"That's it?"
His wife burst into giggles.
"She spent years taking care of Mom for... a dirty mattress?"
Someone joked that even the neighborhood dump wouldn't accept something that disgusting.
Another cousin offered Lina fifty dollars just so she wouldn't have to haul it home.
The lawyer looked uncomfortable.
"I assure you... these were Mrs. Whitmore's exact instructions."
Lina felt heat rising to her face.
Not because she cared about the money.
But because everyone in that room seemed to believe Grandma had forgotten her.
Or worse...
That she hadn't loved her at all.
When the meeting ended, the relatives quickly rushed to inspect the property they had just inherited.
No one even offered to help Lina carry the enormous mattress down from the attic.
It was stained.
Dust covered every inch of it.
The springs groaned whenever it moved.
It smelled like decades of forgotten memories.
"Throw it away," Martha laughed.
"It'll save you the embarrassment."
Lina gently brushed her hand across the faded fabric.
"No."
She smiled softly.
"If Grandma wanted me to have it..."
"I'll keep it."
Hours later...
Her tiny furniture restoration workshop was almost completely blocked by the massive mattress.
Business had been slow lately.
Bills covered her desk.
Her landlord had already warned her twice about late rent.
She couldn't afford to waste space.
So she decided to recycle the stuffing for chair cushions and restore old furniture with whatever material could still be saved.
She carefully cut along one seam.
Dust exploded into the air.
Old cotton...
Horsehair...
Rusty springs...
Layer after layer came apart.
Nearly two hours passed.
Then—
CLANG.
Her knife struck something solid.
She frowned.
"That's strange..."
It wasn't metal.
It wasn't a spring.
It sounded...
Like a box.
Her heartbeat suddenly quickened.
Hands trembling, Lina dug deeper through decades of compressed stuffing.
Something wrapped tightly in oilcloth slowly emerged from the darkness.
It had been hidden intentionally.
Very carefully.
Almost lovingly.
Whoever placed it there never wanted anyone else to find it.
She carefully unwrapped one corner...
...and instantly froze.
Her breathing stopped.
Her entire body went numb.
Because staring back at her...
May you like
...was something that could destroy her entire family's lives forever.
