Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Ultimatum

Daniel stared at the folder like it was a ticking time bomb. The bravado he had displayed behind the glass door just twenty-four hours ago was completely gone.

“Mom, please,” Daniel choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. “If we get felony convictions, we’re finished. My career is over. Vanessa’s boutique will be liquidated. The kids... what will happen to the kids?”

“You should have thought about the kids before you decided to lock your mother outside to freeze to death,” I replied, my tone unwavering.

“Is there... is there another way?” Vanessa asked, her voice trembling with absolute terror. “A settlement? An agreement?”

I walked slowly around the table, stopping right beside them. I looked down at my son—the boy I had raised, protected, and funded—and felt a profound coldness that had nothing to do with the winter weather.

“There is a way,” I said slowly. “But you won't like it.”

“Name it,” Daniel whispered eagerly. “Anything.”

“First, you will sign a full, notarized confession admitting to the forgery of the deed transfer and the conspiracy involving the fraudulent medical evaluation.”

Vanessa gasped. “A confession? That’s an admission of guilt! You could still turn it over to the police!”

“I will hold it in escrow,” I corrected her smoothly. “As an absolute sword of Damocles over your heads. Step out of line, violate any condition of this agreement, or attempt to contact me or my lawyers ever again, and that folder drops instantly into the hands of the federal prosecutor.”

Daniel swallowed hard, nodding frantically. “What else?”

“Second,” I continued, crossing my arms, “you will vacate my house within the next four hours. Not a single piece of my furniture, my art, or my personal belongings is to be touched or damaged. If I find so much as a scratch on my hardwood floors, the deal is off.”

“Fine! We’ll pack right now!” Vanessa cried.

“Third,” I said, locking eyes with both of them, “you will sign over all claims, shares, and secondary titles to your lake house and the boutique. They will revert entirely back to the Hale Family Trust. You are walking away with exactly zero dollars of my money, starting today.”

Daniel stared at me in shock. “Mom... that’s everything we have. We’ll be homeless.”

May you like

“You won't be homeless,” I said coldly. “You have an old Honda Civic in the driveway. Drive away in it, just like you forced me out in my slippers. Experience what it feels like to have nothing, so you finally learn the value of integrity.”

Vanessa opened her mouth to argue, but one look at my expression silenced her. She knew they had lost.
