CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT WOULD DIE

By the time they dragged me down from the attic, I barely weighed ninety pounds.

The IV stand rattled beside me because it was the only thing keeping me alive. Every breath felt like broken glass scraping through my lungs. My fingers shook too violently to hold a glass of water.

Victor Harlan didn't care.

My father-in-law yanked the needle from my arm so hard blood splashed across the marble floor.

"You've drained enough from this family," he growled.

Before I could react, his hand smashed across my face.

The force sent me crashing onto the glass coffee table.

CRACK.

Thousands of razor-sharp pieces exploded beneath me.

Pain shot through my back.

Blood spread across the expensive white carpet.

Marissa folded her arms, watching with a satisfied smile.

"I told you she'd break eventually."

My husband, Adrian, didn't even bother looking up from his phone.

"Can we finish this already?" he sighed. "The realtor is coming this afternoon."

Realtor.

The word hit me harder than Victor's slap.

They weren't waiting for me to recover.

They were preparing to sell my mansion.

A month earlier, Adrian had stood beside my hospital bed with tears in his eyes.

"Baby... just sign these temporary transfer papers. My parents will protect everything until you're healthy again."

I believed him.

The next morning...

I woke up locked inside the attic.

No doctor.

No medicine.

No phone.

No visitors.

Only stale bread whenever one frightened maid secretly climbed the stairs.

They told the world I had traveled overseas for treatment.

They blocked every call from my grandfather.

They even forged my signature on letters claiming I wanted no contact with anyone.

But while they starved me...

I kept thinking.

For six years I had been chief forensic accountant for Malcolm Vale Industries.

Numbers never lied.

People always did.

Every invoice Adrian showed me...

Every company Victor purchased...

Every transfer hidden behind shell corporations...

I memorized everything.

Even locked in that attic...

I built their entire fraud network inside my head.

Victor suddenly pushed his polished shoe against my throat.

"You should've died weeks ago."

Darkness crept into my vision.

Then...

The front doors burst open.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.

Three attorneys.

Two private security officers.

One federal financial investigator.

And behind them...

My grandfather.

Malcolm Vale.

The billionaire who built one of the largest financial empires in America.

His silver cane struck the floor once.

Silence swallowed the room.

His eyes landed on me.

Blood.

Broken glass.

The footprint on my neck.

For several terrifying seconds...

He said nothing.

Then he slowly unfolded a thick leather folder.

"I have the original deed."

Victor frowned.

"So?"

Grandfather smiled.

"And I also have proof this mansion was purchased using money stolen from my granddaughter's inheritance."

One attorney placed another document on the table.

FORECLOSURE NOTICE.

Victor's face turned white.

Adrian whispered,

"No..."

Grandfather took one slow step forward.

"Take your foot off my granddaughter."

Another step.

"Before I take far more than your house."

No one moved.

Because everyone finally realized...

The real nightmare had just begun.
