CHAPTER 2: The Secret Behind the Mop

By 3:00 p.m., the video of Samuel being humiliated had already spread through the company.
People watched it in break rooms.
They laughed in elevators.
Someone even added a cruel caption:
âHawthorne Globalâs most useless employee.â
Brandon Pierce enjoyed every second of it.
He replayed the video during a meeting and smirked.
âMaybe this will finally teach the cleaning staff to stay out of our way.â
Everyone laughed.
Everyone except Emily.
She sat quietly at the end of the table, her stomach turning.
Then the conference room door opened.
The same sharply dressed attorney from the parking lot stepped inside.
Behind him were three serious-looking men in dark suits.
The room went silent.
Brandon frowned.
âWho are you?â
The attorney ignored him and placed a sealed folder on the table.
âIâm here representing the new majority owner of Hawthorne Global Industries.â
Whispers exploded across the room.
New owner?
The CEO stood up, pale.
âThatâs impossible. The board vote isnât until Friday.â
The attorneyâs eyes were cold.
âIt happened this morning.â
Then he turned toward the doorway.
And everyone froze.
Samuel Carter walked in.
Still wearing his janitor uniform.
Still holding his old cap in one hand.
But this timeâŠ
no one laughed.
The attorney said clearly,
âMr. Samuel Carter now owns fifty-one percent of this company.â
Brandonâs face drained of color.
Someone dropped a pen.
Emily covered her mouth.
Samuel slowly looked around the room.
For the first time, he did not look small.
He looked like a man who had been waiting eight years for one moment.
Brandon forced a laugh.
âThis is a joke.â
Samuel placed the faded photograph on the table.
In it were four young engineers standing in front of the companyâs first building.
The CEO leaned closer.
His voice cracked.
âThatâs⊠you.â
Samuel nodded.
âI helped build this company before half of you were born.â
The room became deadly quiet.
Then Samuel pointed to the founderâs name on the wall.
âJonathan Hawthorne was my best friend.â
âAnd before he died, he left me something this company tried very hard to hide.â
Brandon swallowed.
âWhat are you talking about?â
Samuel opened the folder.
Inside were old contracts, ownership papers, and a handwritten letter.
A letter signed by Jonathan Hawthorne himself.
Samuelâs voice became steady.
âYears ago, I was forced out. My shares were buried under legal tricks. My reputation was destroyed.â
He looked directly at Brandon.
âSo I came back as a janitor.â
Everyone stared at him.
âI cleaned your offices.â
âI emptied your trash.â
âI listened when you thought no one important was nearby.â
Then his eyes darkened.
âAnd I learned exactly who was stealing from this company.â
Brandon stopped breathing.
Samuel turned one page.
âUnauthorized bonuses.â
âFake vendor contracts.â
âMoney transferred into shell accounts.â
The attorney opened another file.
âAnd nearly all of it connects to Vice President Brandon Pierce.â
The room erupted.
Brandon stood so fast his chair fell backward.
âYou have no proof!â
Samuel looked at him calmly.
âNo, Brandon.â
âI have everything.â
Then Samuel pressed play on a small recorder.
Brandonâs own voice filled the room.
âOnce the old janitor is fired, no one will ever know what happened to the missing accounts.â
Nobody moved.
Nobody blinked.
For the first time in his lifeâŠ
Brandon Pierce looked terrified.
And Samuel CarterâŠ
May you like
the old janitor everyone mockedâŠ
had not even revealed the worst secret yet.
