CHAPTER 3 – The Secret That Changed Everything

The ballroom remained frozen.
No one dared speak.
Victoria was still kneeling on the marble floor, her expensive diamond necklace shaking against her chest as tears streamed down her face.
"Ethan... don't believe her," she pleaded.
"I did everything for this family."
Ethan didn't answer.
His eyes never left Claire.
For years he had blamed her.
Hated her.
Believed she had abandoned him without a word.
Now every memory came rushing back.
Every unanswered letter.
Every birthday he spent wondering why she never called.
Every lie his mother had carefully planted.
His voice cracked.
"Why didn't you come sooner?"
Claire looked at the little girl beside her before answering.
"I tried."
She reached into another envelope and quietly placed dozens of unopened letters on the table.
Every single one was addressed to Ethan.
Every one had been stamped RETURN TO SENDER.
"I never stopped writing."
"I never stopped loving you."
Ethan picked up the oldest letter.
The date was six years earlier—the same week their daughter had been born.
His hands began to shake as he read the first sentence.
"If you're reading this, it means someone finally let my words reach you. Our daughter needs her father."
A tear rolled down his cheek.
He had missed six years of birthdays.
Six years of bedtime stories.
Six years of hearing his daughter call someone else "Daddy."
Suddenly the ballroom doors opened again.
Three federal investigators walked inside, followed by two uniformed officers.
The lead investigator spoke loudly.
"Victoria Hawthorne?"
"You are under investigation for fraud, identity theft, destruction of legal documents, and obstruction of inheritance proceedings."
The room erupted into panic.
Victoria tried to run.
She barely made three steps before the officers stopped her.
As the handcuffs clicked shut, every camera in the ballroom flashed at once.
The woman who had ruled the Hawthorne empire for decades was being led away in front of the entire city's elite.
But before leaving, Victoria turned toward Claire with a bitter smile.
"You think you've won?"
Claire remained silent.
Victoria laughed.
"The real owner isn't you."
Everyone frowned.
"What do you mean?" Ethan asked.
Victoria looked directly at the little girl.
"No one has told her the truth."
Claire's face turned pale.
The child squeezed her mother's hand.
"Mommy... what truth?"
Claire slowly knelt beside her daughter.
With tears filling her eyes, she whispered the words she had hidden for six long years.
"Sweetheart..."
"Ethan isn't your biological father."
The entire ballroom gasped.
Even Ethan staggered backward.
Then Claire continued.
"He chose to be your father the day he promised to protect us..."
"...but someone stole that future from all of us."
The silence was deafening.
No one realized that the biggest secret of the Hawthorne family...
May you like
Had only just begun.
