CHAPTER 5 — The Son Who Never Knew the Truth

Federal Prison.
Visitation Room B.
Ethan had barely slept since the wedding.
Every newspaper called him a monster.
His lawyers had resigned.
His bank accounts were frozen.
And his mother...
Refused to see him.
Until today.
Vivian entered wearing an orange prison uniform.
For the first time in Ethan's life...
She looked old.
Very old.
He slammed both hands against the table.
"You lied to me!"
Vivian remained calm.
"I protected you."
"You told me Richard Lawson died naturally!"
"He was supposed to."
Ethan stared.
"...What?"
Vivian folded her hands.
"There are things you were never meant to know."
Silence.
Then...
"I arranged Richard's death."
Ethan's face turned white.
"But he survived."
The room suddenly felt too small.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"You tried to kill Claire's father?"
Vivian smiled sadly.
"I built everything for you."
"I gave you power."
"I gave you wealth."
"I gave you a future."
Ethan slowly pushed his chair backward.
"No."
"You gave me prison."
Outside the prison...
Daniel waited inside the car.
Claire never entered.
She already knew what Vivian would say.
Instead...
She watched the prison gates through the windshield.
Daniel finally spoke.
"You still love him."
Claire didn't answer immediately.
"I loved the man he pretended to be."
She looked toward the gray concrete walls.
"That man never existed."
Three days later...
Vivian's journal unlocked another mystery.
One entry...
Written twenty-six years earlier.
Only one sentence.
"The baby has been moved. Nobody must ever connect Claire to the Sterling inheritance."
Claire read it twice.
Then a third time.
"The Sterling inheritance?"
Daniel froze.
"There hasn't been a Sterling family in decades."
Claire looked up.
"Exactly."
"So why would Vivian write that?"
Daniel immediately began searching old archives.
Twenty minutes later...
His expression changed completely.
"You need to see this."
On the monitor appeared an old newspaper clipping.
THE STERLING FAMILY PERISHES IN PRIVATE PLANE CRASH
No survivors.
Except...
One missing infant.
The baby had never been found.
Daniel slowly looked toward Claire.
"Claire..."
"How old are you?"
She answered quietly.
"Twenty-nine."
May you like
The missing baby...
Had disappeared twenty-nine years ago.
