CHAPTER 1 — The Giant No One Dared to Challenge

The first thing people noticed wasn't the cattle.
It was the dog.
Every sunrise, a creature the size of a small bear stood on the highest hill overlooking Mason Carter's ranch in northern Montana. His thick silver-and-black fur shimmered beneath the morning light, and his golden eyes never stopped scanning the horizon.
His name was Titan.
Nearly 190 pounds of muscle, instinct, and absolute loyalty.
Visitors often whispered that Titan wasn't a dog at all.
"He has to be part wolf."
"No dog gets that big."
"I heard he killed three mountain lions."
Mason never corrected them.
He simply smiled and scratched Titan behind one giant ear.
"He's exactly what my family needed."
For seven years, Titan had never failed.
Coyotes disappeared whenever he appeared.
Bears avoided the valley.
Even wolves kept their distance.
At night, ranchers miles away claimed they could hear Titan's thunderous bark echo across the mountains.
To them, it sounded less like a warning...
...and more like a promise.
No one touches this herd.
Business had never been better.
Over six hundred head of Angus cattle grazed peacefully across the rolling fields.
The Carters had become one of the richest ranch families in the county.
But success attracts jealousy.
Especially from men who wanted land more than they respected life.
Across the valley lived Victor Hale.
He owned the neighboring ranch.
Years ago, his family had controlled most of the county.
Now?
Bankruptcy loomed over him like a storm cloud.
Victor blamed only one man.
Mason.
"If that mutt disappeared," Victor muttered one evening, staring through binoculars.
"I'd own everything."
Standing beside him were three armed poachers.
Not hunters.
Killers.
One adjusted the scope on his rifle.
"One shot?"
Victor nodded slowly.
"One shot."
"But don't touch the cattle."
The hunter frowned.
"Then why?"
Victor smiled.
"Because once their guardian is gone..."
"...the wolves will finish the rest."
That same night...
Titan refused dinner.
He stood perfectly still beside the fence.
His ears twitched.
His nose lifted toward the dark forest.
Then...
He growled.
Not loudly.
Just once.
Deep.
Low.
Ancient.
The horses instantly became restless.
The sheep crowded together.
Even the cattle stopped chewing.
Mason noticed immediately.
"What is it, boy?"
Titan didn't look back.
His eyes remained locked on the tree line.
Something...
...was already watching.
Far beyond the shadows...
Dozens of glowing eyes slowly opened.
Not coyotes.
Too large.
Not bears.
Too many.
Whatever was hiding in those woods had been waiting for this night.
And Titan knew it.
He stepped away from Mason.
One slow step.
Then another.
Then he disappeared into the darkness alone.
Mason had no idea...
...it would be the last peaceful night his ranch would ever know.
At exactly 2:13 a.m...
A single rifle shot shattered the silence.
Then another.
Then came a sound no one in the valley had ever heard before.
Titan...
...howled.
Not in pain.
Not in fear.
But like he was calling...
May you like
...an army.
