Chapter 3 - THE SMEAR CAMPAIGN

Hook: Over night, Mia became the most hated woman on the internet. But a hidden camera in the diner was about to change everything.By noon the next day, Mia’s world had completely collapsed.

Julian and Victoria’s public relations machine had moved with terrifying speed. When Mia woke up, her phone was exploding with notifications. Local news channels, national tabloids, and social media platforms were flooded with headlines: "Gold-Digging Waitress Scams Senile Millionaire Out of $42 Million Inheritance."

They had found old photos of Mia from high school, twisted them to make her look manipulative, and even published her home address. Reporters were camped out on her front lawn, shoving microphones into her face when she tried to check the mailbox. Her mother’s phone was ringing off the hook with threatening calls from strangers calling Mia a monster.

"Mia, sweetie, what is happening?" her mother, Sarah, asked from her bed, her breathing labored. "The news... they’re saying horrible things about you."

"Don't look at it, Mom. Please," Mia begged, kneeling by her bed, her face buried in her hands. "I didn't do anything wrong. Arthur left me his money because he hated how they treated him. But they are going to ruin us."

Just then, Elaine Porter arrived at the house, flanked by two bodyguards who quickly cleared the reporters off the porch. Inside, Elaine looked grim.

"They've filed the injunction, Mia. A corrupt local judge who has ties to Julian’s hedge fund just signed an emergency order freezing the inheritance assets pending a full trial. Worse, they’ve convinced the local police department to open a preliminary investigation into you for elder financial exploitation."

"Can they actually arrest me?" Mia asked, terrified.

"If they manufacture enough fake evidence, yes," Elaine said heavily. "Julian has hired a private investigator who is currently offering $10,000 to anyone in the diner who will testify that they saw you drugging Arthur’s coffee or manipulating him into signing papers."

"That’s a lie! Frank knows I never did that!" Mia cried.

"Frank just fired you via text message, Mia," Elaine said softly, holding up her own phone. "He’s terrified of being sued by the Harris family. He’s cooperating with them."

Mia felt the room spinning. She was completely isolated, broke, and facing prison time. The kindness she had shown a lonely old man had turned into a weapon that was destroying her family.

But that evening, as Mia sat in her darkened living room listening to the reporters shouting outside, her phone buzzed with an unknown number. She answered it out of desperation.

"Mia? It’s Toby," a young voice whispered frantically. It was the teenage dishwasher who worked the night shift at the diner. "Listen to me, I have to be fast. Frank is a coward, he took money from the Harris family to wipe the diner's security cameras. But Frank doesn't know anything about technology."

"What do you mean, Toby?" Mia asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"The diner updated its security system last month to a cloud-based server. I have the master login on my phone," Toby whispered. "I just checked the footage from the day Arthur brought in his lawyers to sign the final will update. The audio is crystal clear. Arthur explicitly talks about his children on that tape. Mia... if the world hears what Arthur said on that video, his children are completely finished."
