Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM SHOWDOWN

Hook: Julian smiled as the judge prepared to strip the waitress of her inheritance. Then, the projector screen turned on.The supreme courtroom of Clearwater County was packed to maximum capacity. Media cameras were lined up at the back, broadcasting the trial live to millions across the country.
Julian and Victoria Harris sat at the plaintiff’s table, looking triumphant. Julian wore a smug smile, occasionally whispering to his team of high-powered corporate lawyers. Victoria was busy adjusting her diamond necklace, looking at Mia with utter contempt.
Mia sat next to Elaine Porter. She wore the same simple black dress she had worn to Arthur’s funeral. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were no longer filled with fear. They were filled with a quiet, lethal determination.
The judge slammed his gavel. "We are here today to determine the validity of the Last Will and Testament of Arthur Harris. The plaintiffs claim undue influence, fraud, and severe cognitive decline. Counsel for the plaintiffs, you may present your closing argument."
Julian’s lead attorney stood up, straightening his tie. "Your Honor, the evidence is overwhelming. Mia Reynolds is a predator. She targeted a fragile, ninety-year-old man suffering from advanced dementia. She used her position as his waitress to isolate him from his loving family, manipulating him into signing away a forty-two million dollar empire. We ask that this fraudulent will be thrown out immediately, and full custody of the estate be returned to his rightful, grieving children."
A murmur of agreement went through the crowd. The public opinion in the room was entirely against Mia.
"The court recognizes Elaine Porter for the defense," the judge announced.
Elaine stood up calmly. "Your Honor, my client did not manipulate Arthur Harris. In fact, Arthur Harris was fully aware of exactly who his children were. He knew they were greedy, malicious, and desperate. And he recorded a statement to ensure his true wishes were never suppressed."
Julian sneered from his table. "A recorded statement? The old man didn't even know what day it was!"
"Let’s look at the evidence," Elaine said smoothly. She signaled to her assistant, who lowered a massive projector screen in the middle of the courtroom.
The video began to play. The entire courtroom watched as Arthur Harris appeared on the screen, speaking with absolute clarity and fierce intelligence. He detailed how his children had neglected him, how they had tried to lock him away in an asylum, and how Mia’s pure kindness had saved his final days.
The courtroom went dead silent. Victoria’s face turned bright red. Julian’s smug smile began to falter.
"This is a fabrication! An AI deepfake!" Julian’s lawyer shouted, jumping to his feet. "We demand this digital garbage be thrown out!"
"Oh, we are not done yet," Elaine Porter said, her voice echoing like a thunderclap. "We have one more video file to show. This file is from the night of October 14th—less than twelve hours before Arthur Harris was found dead in his bed."
Mia watched Julian’s face. In an instant, all the color drained from his skin. He tried to stand up, but his knees shook. "Your Honor, this is irrelevant to a probate hearing—"
"Play the video," the judge ordered, his eyes narrowing.
The screen shifted to the dark diner. The footage showed Julian Harris aggressively confronting his father, threatening him, and finally, switching Arthur’s vital heart medication with a lethal alternative.
Gasps of absolute horror echoed through the gallery. Victoria turned to look at her brother, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Julian... what did you do?"

"It’s a lie! Turn it off!" Julian screamed, losing all control. He bolted toward the courtroom doors, but the four heavy bodyguards Elaine had hired blocked the exits instantly. Within seconds, undercover police officers who had been waiting in the back gallery swarmed forward, tackling Julian to the marble floor and slamming handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Julian Harris, you are under arrest for the first-degree murder of Arthur Harris," the lead detective shouted over the roaring chaos of the courtroom.
