CHAPTER 3 — The Secret Hidden Inside the Lantern

Bullets ripped through the wooden cabin like rain.
The walls splintered.
The lantern swung wildly from its hook.
Smoke filled the tiny room.
Ben fired through the back window while Dominic struggled to reload with one injured arm.
Sarah crawled toward the floor safe.
Not for money.
For medical supplies.
Instead...
she discovered something no one expected.
The lantern wasn't attached to the ceiling.
It was attached to a hidden steel compartment.
Inside...
sat a small velvet pouch.
Sarah opened it.
A single memory card.
And an envelope.
Across the front...
Carmine Rossi's handwriting.
If Dominic survives...
show this only to the woman who saves him.
Sarah's hands trembled.
Inside lay one handwritten letter.
"Sarah..."
"If you're reading this, then fate has chosen you instead of my family."
"I have watched every employee in this estate for years."
"Most served because they feared us."
"Some because we paid them."
"Only one stayed kind when nobody was watching."
"That was you."
Sarah stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
"Three months ago I learned Lorenzo planned to murder Dominic."
"I also learned someone inside the medical school secretly paid your tuition until graduation."
Sarah stared.
"What?"
Dominic looked equally confused.
The final page answered everything.
"It was me."
"Your mother once saved my wife's life in a county hospital and refused payment."
"She told me kindness always returns."
"This is mine."
"Protect my son..."
"and everything I own belongs to the woman who refused to abandon him."
Dominic slowly lowered his weapon.
"You never knew?"
Sarah shook her head.
"My tuition payments came through anonymous scholarships."
Tears filled her eyes.
Outside...
the shooting suddenly stopped.
Silence.
Then loudspeakers echoed through the forest.
Lorenzo himself had arrived.
His calm voice carried through the snow.
"Dominic."
"I know you're alive."
"And Sarah..."
"You have something that belongs to me."
Sarah looked at Dominic.
Dominic looked back.
Neither reached for the money.
Neither reached for the evidence.
Instead...
they reached for the same memory card.
Because they both realized something terrifying.
Carmine Rossi had not left behind financial records.
He had left behind a video.
One capable of destroying not only Lorenzo...
but half the most powerful people in America.
May you like
And everyone outside that cabin...
was willing to kill to keep it buried.
