CHAPTER 6 — THE HIDDEN NURSERY

Emily pushed the silver key into the ancient lock.
Click.
The mechanism turned with a metallic groan.
Deep beneath the warehouse floor...
Something unlocked.
An elevator no blueprint mentioned slowly rose from beneath the concrete.
Dust filled the air.
Margaret screamed,
"STOP HER!"
The guards rushed forward.
Daniel instinctively stepped between them and Emily.
"No!"
Margaret stared at her son in disbelief.
"Move."
Daniel didn't.
"They've done enough."
Evelyn's voice became dangerously quiet.
"You're choosing her?"
Daniel answered without turning around.
"I'm choosing my children."
Margaret slapped him so hard his lip split.
"You weak fool!"
"They'll destroy everything!"
Daniel wiped the blood from his mouth.
"No."
"They'll expose everything."
Emily grabbed Quincy's hand.
The hidden elevator doors slid open.
Inside waited a spotless underground corridor unlike the abandoned warehouse above.
Bright white lights.
Fresh paint.
Modern security cameras.
It looked less like a hospital...
and more like a private laboratory.
Every wall displayed only one symbol:
A golden tree.
Its roots wrapped around an infant.
Emily felt sick.
"What is this place?"
Daniel whispered,
"The Carter Nursery."
They stepped inside.
Automatic lights flickered on one by one.
Room after room appeared behind reinforced glass.
Empty cribs.
Medical equipment.
DNA scanners.
Family photographs.
Birth certificates.
Every child had been documented.
Catalogued.
Tracked.
Not adopted.
Collected.
Emily's stomach twisted.
On one wall hung thirty-six framed photographs.
Each showed a newborn beside a smiling family.
Different names.
Different countries.
Different lives.
But every photograph carried the same golden tree emblem.
Quincy counted softly.
"...Thirty-six..."
Then he pointed toward an empty frame.
Number 37.
The card beneath it read:
FAITH CARTER
Status: Pending Placement
Emily felt rage unlike anything she had ever known.
"They already prepared her file."
Daniel nodded.
"They planned everything before she was born."
"But why?"
Nobody answered.
Then...
A tiny cry echoed down the hallway.
Emily froze.
She knew that cry.
Every mother would.
Faith.
Still alive.
The cry came from the last room.
Its steel door bore only three words:
AUTHORIZED BLOODLINE ACCESS
Emily ran.
Behind her, alarms suddenly exploded throughout the underground facility.
Red lights flashed.
A mechanical voice echoed through the corridor:
"Containment breach detected."
Steel doors slammed shut behind them one after another.
The entire underground complex began sealing itself.
Margaret smiled through the closing doorway.
"You've just locked yourselves inside."
Evelyn calmly pressed a button on a hidden remote.
The final blast door started descending.
Daniel's face drained of color.
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"What is it?"
His voice trembled.
"There's something else down here."
"What?"
He swallowed hard.
"The children who were never adopted."
Silence.
Then...
From somewhere beyond the final steel door...
came dozens of small voices.
Not crying.
Not screaming.
Just one eerie question, whispered together in the darkness:
May you like
"Is our mother finally here?"
To Be Continued...
