Chapter 4 - The Sound of Glass BreakingTime seemed to fracture into slow motion.

Declan didn't think. He didn't calculate the odds or weigh the corporate consequences. He lunged forward across the span of the server room just as Thomas’s finger pulled back on the trigger.

Crack.

The deafening report of the Glock echoed off the steel server racks. A shower of sparks erupted from a cooling unit inches above Sarah’s head as the bullet shattered a fiber-optic cable.

Declan hit Thomas full-force, driving his shoulder into the older man’s chest.

They crashed hard against a towering stack of backup servers. Metal buckled under the impact; warning klaxons began to wail overhead, flashing a harsh, blinding amber light. Thomas grunted, gasping for air as Declan pinned him to the floor, his fingers wrapping around Thomas’s wrist to force the barrel of the gun upward.

"You old bastard!" Declan roared, rage overriding every ounce of reason. "You killed my father, and you tried to kill the mother of my child!"

"You're a fool, Deck!" Thomas laughed, coughing up blood as he struggled to bring the weapon back around. "The federal marshals are already in the lobby! The moment those servers finish uploading, Hale Maritime isn't just ruined—we’re all going away for life!"

"Let them!" Declan shouted back.

He slammed Thomas’s wrist against the edge of a steel rack. The gun slipped from the older man’s grip, clattering across the slick floor and sliding beneath a row of heavy machinery.

Before Declan could pin him completely, Thomas reached into his ankle holster with a hidden backup knife, its 6-inch steel blade gleaming menacingly under the amber emergency lights.

"Declan! Look out!" Sarah screamed from behind the terminal.

Declan twisted to the side just as the blade slashed through the sleeve of his coat, tearing deep into the flesh of his upper arm. Warm blood soaked through his shirt instantly.

He ignored the pain. Using his body weight, Declan drove his knee upward into Thomas’s ribs with a sickening crunch. Thomas gasped, his eyes rolling back as the wind was completely knocked out of him. He slumped back against the server rack, unconscious.

Declan stood up, breathing heavily, clutching his bleeding arm.

He turned back toward the terminal. Sarah was slumped over the keyboard, her hands gripping the edge of the desk as violent tremors wracked her body.

"Sarah!" Declan rushed to her side, catching her before she slid to the floor.

"The... the upload," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring alarms. "It's at ninety-eight percent... Declan... they have everything."

He looked at the main monitor.

The progress bar was crawling toward completion.

99%... 100%... TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.

Instantly, the server room fell dead silent. The klaxons stopped wailing. The automated fire suppression vents hissed open, flooding the room with a thick, odorless cloud of fire-retardant gas.

From the hallway outside came the heavy, coordinated thud of tactical boots.

"Federal agents! Don't move!" a voice bellowed through a megaphone down the corridor.

Declan knelt on the cold concrete floor, pulling Sarah tightly against his chest. He looked at the blood on his arm, the unconscious body of Thomas across the room, and the flashing terminal screens that signaled the absolute, irreversible death of Hale Maritime.

He didn't care.

He pressed his lips against Sarah’s forehead, whispering into her hair as the heavy steel doors of the vault were blown open by a tactical charge.

"It's over," Declan said softly. "We're free."
